Raymond Vecchio

Detective Raymond "Ray" Vecchio is a fictional character in the television series Due South. He is a detective with the Chicago Police Department, serving with the 27th Precinct. The character is portrayed by actor David Marciano.

Ray was born and bred in Chicago. He has a large family - including his mother, sister Francesca Vecchio, sister Maria and her husband Tony, many nieces and nephews and a brother who lives outside of Chicago. His father died in 1989 and did not like police officers, which might explain by way of rebellion why Ray became one. Ray is also divorced from ex-wife Angie, although he has been involved with a few women since. His "best friend"/partner is the Canadian Mountie Benton Fraser, who is based at the Canadian Consulate in Chicago, who often helps him solve crimes in the Chicago area.

Fraser is Ray's opposite in many ways - whereas the Mountie is polite and well-mannered, Ray is loud, brash and will often bend the rules to solve a case. This forms much of the comedy of the show.

Ray is obsessed with 1971 Buick Riviera cars. He has currently owned at least 3 of them - the first was blown up to save his and Fraser's lives, the second was destroyed when a bomb blew it up, and the third was also fitted with a bomb and was driven into Lake Michigan.

Ray is not very good with computers, preferring to use a typewriter instead. He also relies on Civilian Aide Elaine Besbriss to do a lot of research for him until she finally graduates from the police academy as a full-fledged officer. Despite this, he is a good cop (despite the occasional backlog of cases).

Ray had to suddenly leave Chicago at the start of the third season. It turned out he had an uncanny resemblance to Armando 'the Bookman' Langoustini, a Mob lieutenant in Las Vegas. After the Bookman died in a car crash, Ray was sent undercover to replace him. To protect his identity, Ray himself was impersonated by Detective Stan Kowalksi, who posed as Ray Vecchio for the next year.
