Ravenspurn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ravenspurn was an old Yorkshire town in the United Kingdom which was lost due to coastal erosion. The town is one of more than 30 along the Holderness Coast which have been lost to the North Sea since the 1800's. The town was located close to the end of a peninsula close to Ravenser Odd, which has also been flooded. The peninsula still survives in some form today and is known as Spurn Head, the North Sea lies to the East of the peninsula, the river Humber lies to the West.

The nearest major city was Kingston Upon Hull.

The region of coastline is knonwn as the Holderness coast, geologically the land is made from glacial tills (boulder clay). This type of land is subject to coastal erosion and the town was lost to the sea.

Now at sea, areas around the site are being drilled for natural gas.
