From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raul Pompéia was a Brazilian writer, who was born and died in Rio de Janeiro (1863-1895). He is considered a naturalist author, with his main literary work being O Ateneu. He committed suicide after being challenged to a duel by writer Olavo Bilac; the rationale for the duel being the accusations of said author that Pompéia was an homosexual. O Ateneu is prominent in Brazilian literature to this day.
