[edit] Plot summary
Steven York is 18, a stoner, and struggling to graduate from high school. The school guidance counsellor is puzzled at his fall from grace — Steven York had been excelling at his previous school in Houston, Texas. The counsellor gives Steven a way out of summer school — all he has to do is write a 100-page paper in order to make up his final English credit and graduate.
The narrative alternates between present day (1994) Steven York and his paper, which describes in first person the events in Texas over the past few years that led to his drastic change in character.
Among the events Steve describes in his paper are his friendship with a freewheeling skateboarder named Doug (the initiator of a school club called Skate or Die), his romance with a charismatic schoolmate, and his rocky relationship with his divorced father.
