Ras Dashen (alternatively Ras Dashan or Ras Dejen Ge'ez ራስ ደጀን rās dejen, Amh. "head guard") is the highest mountain in Ethiopia, and is the fourth-highest mountain in Africa. Part of Semien Mountains National Park, it reaches an elevation of 4,533 metres (14,872 ft).
[edit] Elevation
A mapping survey of the country in the 1960s and 1970s established the elevation. The widely-quoted elevation of 4,620 metres is inconsistent with both that survey and SRTM data.
[edit] Spelling
Although transliteration by the system of the Ethiopian Mapping Authority (formerly Agency) gives the spelling "Ras Dejen", which may therefore be considered more correct, the spelling "Ras Dashen" is much more widely used.
