The Novels WikiProject Newsletter: Issue VI - November 2006

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter
Issue VI - November 2006
Project news
  • Due to the diligance of many editors we now have more than 5000 articles tagged as part of the project.
  • The /Assessment department has been making progress with discussions on the top priority level of novels. These are those articles that should be present in any version of this encyclopedia.
  • The "Members" list has been modified with a short archive or "inactive" list).
Member News
  • The project has currently 170 members, 28 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of October 2006. Of these 7 have been moved to a short "Inactive" list due to not contributing to Wikipedia for at least six months. They are free to reactivate themselves at any time, of course!
From the Members

Welcome to the sixth issue of the Novels WikiProject's newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do.

We would encourage all members to get more envolved and if you are wondering what with, please ask.

Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk), Initiating Editor

Auto list news
  • The NovelsInCompleteInfobox has been regenerated at the start of October and was shown to have grown rather than shrunk! So this month I have concentrated my efforts (with some help from Grey Shadow (talk contribs)) on the novels missing "genre" tags. These "genre-less" have now "all" been dealt with. Hopefully we can break the back of this load of work, but it will need help. It would be nice to get these worklists to a state where they can monitor the newly created articles rather than cleaning the retrospective material.
Collaboration of the Month
  • The Collaboration of the Month is going well. October's collaboration was slightly compromised by the removal of our notice early on; however there were still nearly 80 edits to improve the article. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Doctor Zhivago (novel)
Current debates
  • We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum.
Newsletter challenge

Last months Liponym challenge was met by Springeragh (talk contribs), but the article is still a "very" small stub.

  • The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This months' article is Lawrence Durrell's novel Clea.

To stop receiving this newsletter, or to receive it in a different format, please list yourself in the appropriate section here.

Dog

Thank you Randfan, I am very appreciative of you concern, but, good news! She returned later on it the night, barking at the front door to be let in. Silly bugger. And after I ran around the block looking for it. We then watched Cars (film). Once again thank you for your Kindness, Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 23:24, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

P.S The vandalism bar is a great idea! May I use it on my own page? Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 23:24, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Happy Halloween!

Hi Randfan, and a belated Happy Halloween to you as well! I've given size parameters to the Jack o' Lantern image that you gave me, so that it doesn't take up half my talk page. Now it looks like this: Thanks again! --Kyoko 02:17, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...
Natalya, Banes, Celestianpower, EWS23, FireFox, The Halo, Shreshth91 and HighwayCello

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

First Edit Day

Yep, the sixth was my first edit day. One-year anniversary on Wikipedia! Bearly541 accidentally sent me a first edit day banner instead of a birthday one, that's why it comes before some birthday wishes. I told Kyoko the story of my first edit:

I was at my grandparents' on the week-end celebrating my birthday (it was on Friday and I was there on Sunday), and went on the computer while they were fixing up the cake. I looked up something on this Wikipedia site I'd been hearing about, noticed (somehow) that there were pages for some of the Mayors of Ottawa missing, and started on J.P. Featherston's page. So my first edit was a new article, when I was supposed to be celebrating my birthday!

I'm wierd... — Editor at Large(speak) 20:56, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer! The cake is lovely to look at, but I'd love some pumpkin pie... I ran out this morning (had the last piece for breakfast). — Editor at Large(speak) 23:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikiplomacy

Hey Randfan, as Wikiplomacy is gone, would you be ok with me deleting your user subpage on the topic? WikiProject Dragonlance

Hello. I must have missed your joining. Good to see you involved. Have you done any work with it? I can't seem to remember. Also, I noticed you created a template for becoming a member of the WikiProject Dragonlance. We already had one, now then, there's no reason to delete it, I think (I'll ask around), but in the future say something on the talk page. If you did, forgive me; I was gone for a while and lost my bearings somewhat. See ya! DoomsDay349 19:22, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Oh no, I don't want to get rid of your template, it's fine. As for minotaur wars, you're in luck; after I finish Amber & Iron, I'm starting those so we can work on it together. DoomsDay349 20:22, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
No, don't bother waiting up. I should finish A&I this weekend and have Minotaur Wars done before Thanksgiving, so if you finish first it's no problem; I'll be right along. DoomsDay349 20:26, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok, sounds good. Do you have the whole trilogy or will you need to get them? I just purchased Night, Tides, and Empire of Blood so I'm set. DoomsDay349 20:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Hehe, I've got this weird need to own all my books, so I buy as many as possible...bibliomania, perhaps? DoomsDay349 20:38, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
If there is a large bookstore near you, B&N or Borders, perhaps, you can order them. I have to do that for a lot of Dragonlance books. DoomsDay349 20:41, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Agreed to E@L's case. As for your postal system, that's disturbing...do you live in America? You should write a letter (oh the irony!) to the U.S. Government or at least your state government to set up a postal system...it's one of their Constitutional powers, and thus one of their duties. DoomsDay349 20:51, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Hope things work out alright! Look forward to working with you. DoomsDay349 21:00, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Freelance writer

I apologize for editing your user page, but your Talk Page was taking forever to load because of a very large flash animation. I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” I am particuarly interested in talking to you to discuss the Wikipedia Kindness project which you are apparently a part of. If you are interested in participating, please email me at brianwrites@gmail.com

I added this to your talk page. Sorry if you angry. Do you mind if i archive your flash animation (the large one) for you? 76.188.7.83 02:52, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Re:language wiki

There is http://conlang.wiki.com, but its criteria for inclusion is too confusing for me. I created two conlangs: One that is only written, and uses symbols from the Wingdings font, and one that is a twisted version of English, with words spelled as they sound, the omission of "to be" verbs and articles, etc. They're anything but professional, but I like making them up anyways. (Maybe you could create a new wiki for constructed languages!) --Gray Porpoisecetaceans have large brains 00:47, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Redirects

Hi Randfan. Sorry about having to clear up the redirect in your barnstar. There are three cross-namespace redirects left (E@, E@C, and E@ Coffee), and they should really be deleted at WP:RFD. I will propose them there, and you may agree or not agree, but if you do agree that they will deleted under the redirect guidelines - it will save a lot of time if you just add a {{db-author}} speedy-deletion tag to them. Thanks for considering this option. Please point me to any previous discussion of these redirects if there is any. Any replies may be posted here. -- zzuuzz (talk) 01:38, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi again Randfan. Thanks for tagging those - someone else has tagged the other for deletion at WP:RFD. I am just replying because of your response which said that E@ Coffee is easy to type. I would just like to point out several easier-to-type shortcuts, which do not violate the guidelines for redirects. They are: WP:Coffee, WP:EA/CL, WP:COFFEE and WP:ESP/CL. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:49, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

don't worry about it

Hi Randfan, don't worry about leaving images and such on my talk page, it's not necessary and it will only slow things down for people who aren't on broadband access. Thanks anyway. --Kyoko 03:51, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
