Rani Durgawati

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rani Durgawati (died 1564) was the wife of Dalpat shah, the ruler of Gondwana, a kingdom in what is now modern Madhya Pradesh, India. When he died, she became regent for her son Bir Narayan. She ruled from 1548 to 1564, when the Mughal Emperor Akbar of Delhi attacked Gondwana. Durgawati led her forces against the invading army, but was ultimately defeated. She committed suicide by stabbing herself with a dagger to avoid dishonor.
