Ranger Rick

Ranger Rick is a children's nature magazine published in the United States by the National Wildlife Federation. Since the first issue in January, 1967, the magazine has featured articles about the wonders of wildlife and nature discovery. Most of the pages of the magazine feature dramatic, multi-page photo stories of animals in their natural habitats. But there are also illustrated stories, games, riddles, nature news, poetry, contests, and other features and columns.
One of the most popular regular features is "Ranger Rick's Adventures," a comic strip in which the raccoon Ranger Rick and his gang of friends from Deep Green Wood go off into the world to investigate and report on threats to wildlife and environmental problems. These stories are presented in an up-beat, humorous, and positive way that points out what kids and others can do--and are doing--to help conserve wildlife. The magazine's mission reads as follows: "Ranger Rick aims to inspire in its readers a greater understanding of the natural world, a deep love of nature and wildlife, and a lasting commitment to conservation and environmental action."
Ranger Rick magazine is targeted toward children ages 7 and up. The National Wildlife Federation publishes two companion magazines for younger children; Your Big Backyard (ages 4-7) and Wild Animal Baby (ages 1-3). All three of these NWF publications teach children about natural history and wildlife conservation. They also help children learn to read non-fiction material more effectively and are seen by major reading and literacy organizations as useful tools for improving the ability of children to read and understand science and other factual information.
