[edit] Playing career
Shannon is a graduate of Norland High School in Miami, Florida, and the University of Miami. He played college football for the Hurricanes in the mid-1980s and was a starting linebacker on their 1987 national championship squad. After graduating in 1989, he played in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first rookie to start at outside linebacker for the franchise since 1963.
[edit] Early coaching career
At Miami, Shannon was widely considered one of the top defensive coordinators in college football. Year in, year out, his defenses have been among the finest in college football. Shannon was the recipient of the Frank Broyles Award in 2001 (given annually to the best assistant coach in college football) for his work with Miami's record-setting defense that year.
Shannon's defenses are marked by aggressive, turnover-producing play, and are extremely difficult for opposing teams to pass against. In his five seasons as Miami's defensive coordinator, his defenses have led the nation in pass defense three times ('02, '03, '05), pass efficiency defense three times ('01, '03, '05), and scoring defense once ('01).
Shannon's defenses at Miami have ranked as follows in total defense nationally:
Prior to being named Miami's defensive coordinator in 2001, Shannon worked as linebackers coach for the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 2000 and as a defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999.
[edit] University of Miami Head Coach
Randy Shannon was officially introduced as the head coach of Miami on December 8, 2006, replacing Larry Coker in the position. Shannon reportedly agreed to a 4 year deal worth over $4 million. He is the sixth black head coach in Division I-A NCAA football, the others being Karl Dorrell, (UCLA), Sylvester Croom (Mississippi State), Tyrone Willingham (Washington), Ron Prince (KSU), and Turner Gill (Buffalo). Larry Coker is expected to coach Miami at the MPC Computers Bowl, with Shannon taking over all other functions, including recruiting, almost immediately. [2]
