Randy Harvey

Randy J. Harvey is the Toastmasters International 2004 World Champion of Public Speaking, a motivational speaker, trainer, educator, and author.

Randy Harvey won the title of World Champion of Public Speaking from Toastmasters International in August 2004. The competition had over 25,000 contestants[1].

Since winning the 2004 World Championship of Public Speaking, Dr. Harvey has conducted public speaking training throughout the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States.

Prior to winning the World Championship of Public Speaking, Dr. Harvey spent thirty years as a teacher, administrator, human resources professional, and consultant in labor relations and negotiation. He currently works as a professional speaker, consultant and trainer in the areas of public speaking, human resources development, and labor law.

His studies in brain development and education have transferred to his public speaking training; much of his presentation training deals with educating speakers in how to prepare and present speeches that optimize the audience’s brain activity during listening.

Born on June 22, 1953 at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, Randy Harvey lived at various military locations until he was in the third grade. His family settled in Molalla, Oregon when Randy was in the fifth grade and he graduated from high school there in June 1972. Despite having a “C” average, he was selected as the commencement speaker and delivered a speech titled, “Let Every Man’s Hope be in Himself.” He attended Eastern Oregon College (later renamed Eastern Oregon University) and worked his way through college as a lumber mill worker, railroad gandy dancer, sheep shearer, baseball official and laborer.

He married Shelly Dee Worthey on December 18, 1976. They have four children, one of whom is deceased.

Randy taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades from 1977 to 1982. He then worked as an elementary principal and special education director until 1986 when he began his doctorate program at the University of Oregon. While completing his doctoral studies, he also worked as the principal of a middle school in Bethel, Oregon.

He finished his Ph.D. in 1989 having focused his research on “at-risk youth.” In May 1995, Dr. Harvey took a job with the Springfield School District as Assistant Director of Personnel. In this same year he began his labor consulting business as a chief labor negotiator and advocate. Two years later he was promoted to Director of Personnel.

Dr. Harvey was on scene at Thurston High School when Kip Kinkel shot twenty-two students and killed two after he had murdered his parents. Since then, he has helped organizations develop crisis management programs.

In 1999 Dr. Harvey took a position with the Tigard-Tualatin School District as Director of Human Resources. During his time with the District he served as Director of Operations and Director of High Schools.

Dr. Harvey began working towards his Doctor of Jurisprudence in January 2003; he obtained this degree in November 2006.
