The Random Battle Group, or RBG, is an interactive performance group that specializes in creating safe live-action turn-based mock random battles in the style of a console role-playing game. The Random Battle Group typically participate at anime and gaming conventions and provide an alternative, interactive and unique form of entertainment for convention-goers.

[edit] History

The idea for the Random Battle Group started at Tekkoshocon in 2005 as an impromptu gathering of convention-goers and current staff members "battling" during the convention; due to security reasons, the fighting was forced to cease. The success of the random battles, however, spread into the following ColossalCon convention. It was there that, due to the popularity, the now current Random Battle Group staff decided to create an official group dedicated to holding official events at conventions. The Group organized itself into specific jobs and created the framework that the random battles are based upon, including a system of rules and procedures to ensure the safety and enjoyment of participants.

[edit] Random battles

A random battle, as it pertains to the game, occurs when a hero's party randomly encounters monsters on the map. The engagement ends when either side of the conflict is annihilated or retreats from battle. The victors are then rewarded with money or items per the discretion of the Gamemaster and/or defined rules. The Random Battle Group's encounters are loosely based off of the Final Fantasy VII fighting system.

[edit] Rules of engagement

Random Battle Group performs many exhibitions for the public; however, audience participation is greatly encouraged and many guests assist the RBG Core and Secondary members (the group's performing staff) during their events. The RBG battles entail three people on each side (the center position taken by an official member of the RBG staff for participant protection) of a playing field. A center "safety line" is marked to indicate how close attackers can get to their targets before performing their attack. Although hit points or initiative are not properly indicated in most cases, honest role-playing is rewarded and character death is typically enforced by the technical staff and/or Master of Ceremonies of the battle. The last team standing is declared the winner and given the proper fanfare in traditional turn-based CRPG style.

[edit] Other RBG events

Along with the normal random battle events performed, the RBG also runs several other events, some general and some con-specific.

[edit] Live-Action Game (LAG)

Currently only being offered at ColossalCon, LAG is a convention-wide, live-action CRPG-style event where participants can either adventure on their own or with a party of three and random battle, boss battle, player battle with other teams, or accept quests from staff non-player characters to gain 'money', items and skills and progress through the storyline.

[edit] Project Super Secret Box

A recently alpha/beta-tested event based on Metal Gear Solid where participants move through an obstacle course-like scenario complete with 'walls' and a box to conceal themselves in. Using 'weapons' such as a foam knife or NERF guns, the objective is to get through the course without being seen or shot by the guards, and take down the boss. So far Project SSB has only been offered at Tsubasacon.

[edit] Glomping 101

A panel dedicated to teaching convention-goers proper glomping etiquette.

[edit] Whose Line Is It Anime?

An anime and gaming themed version of the popular improvisation show Whose Line Is It Anyway? where members (with audience participation) act out humorous scenes based on audience suggestions.
