[edit] zip & area codes

I just noticed that our city articles lack Zip and area codes by default. Do you think this is something rambot could automatically add? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 02:46, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm guessing the answer is no. For instance, which zip code do you use in a major city like Philadelphia? If all of them, then you may have trouble tracking them down as named sections of the city have their own. For instance: Chesnut Hill, PA is 19118, yet most of Chesnut Hill is inside Philly. But 19118 also "spills" outside the city line. Or for that matter do you list Philly's 3 area codes, even if those area codes extend into distant northern suburbs. Also I believe RamBot is driven by the census data, however the post office and census bureau are not on the same page. For instance Conowingo, Maryland is not a CDP, but has a post office and zip code. I live in a "village" that still has its own zip, but no longer has its tiny PO. My CDP is a township which covers bits and pieces of several zip codes.--J Clear 03:21, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
that is a good point, but in america there are maybe 100 cities that have multiple area/zip codes. For thousands of cities it would be a usefull bit of info. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 03:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Every time you have an exception, the bot programming is going to get more difficult. I ammended my comment above abit.--J Clear 03:31, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
When considering zip codes, generally people associated a zip code with a name, not a geographical area. Thus, when one considers Philadelphia, any of the "Philadelphia" zip codes could be listed, even though some of those zip codes include surrounding areas. It's just a matter of simplification. Since the zip codes do not generally align to governmental geographic boundaries, it just makes no sense to try to make them do so. It isn't inaccurate to do it this way, although perhaps not fully obvious that a zip code may be in more than one locale. Before I moved on to other things, I had planned to eventually add zip codes to the articles automatically. Perhaps some day I will. But nothing is to stop others from adding information in the meantime. Maybe I'll do it in 2010ish when I plan to update the articles with the new census information. Perhaps sooner. — Ram-Man (comment) (talk) 13:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
One of the problems I've had is just this problem. The census bureau, local governments, post offices, and local residents may all disagree about where and what a place is. Because I created most of the articles, they all have an inherent "bias" towards what the census bureau has chosen. However, this is minimized and often eliminated in practice. For instance, since the names are correct, people write an article from the "normal people" perspective about a place that may or may not exactly match the census bureau's geographical outline. But in this case it is good enough, because it isn't possible for all 4 competing sources to agree. Articles on a place just contain a mix of data that may not technically be describing exactly the same place, but generally speaking they are. This is of course what you would expect from an encyclopedia article. If you wanted the exact specifics, you'd go to the specific source itself. This is why references and citing sources is important. — Ram-Man (comment) (talk) 13:13, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Ram-Man, have spent a lot of time working through these same issues about ZIP Codes and ZCTAs on a different project of mine ZipCodeStats (and yes I did build the bots and mine the data for it). I finally realized that the issue is really one of relevancy. ZCTA do not match directly to ZIP Codes, and probably never will (thought the US Census is working on closer approximations). Also, ZIP Codes will never match exactly to cities either...especially if you start looking at MSA issues (since cities are ever expanding and annexing, is Los Angles a city or MSA, etc.). But this entire issue still boils down to one of relevance. We simply try (just like the Census Bureau) to build as accurate and relevant of a snapshot as we can about areas using the most accurate methods and data that we can. Add to this the fact that the old ZCTA (2000) do not correlate to the current (2003) and will not correlate to the future (2009)...and you end up trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. The Census Bureau recommends going back and recalculating the current ZCTAs from 2000 Block level data if you want accuracy...a HUGE task...one they themselves are not even willing to do (though I might at some point). So in that I say, just throw out the ZCTAs and focus on adding ZIP Codes to the cities. ZIP Codes are the property of the USPS anyhow not the Census Bureau. If the USPS says that a ZIP Code is “relevant” to a city, village, or town...I say you show it. Some towns will share the same ZIP Code, yes, but that IS the accurate ZIP Code for that town and it is still relevant information. Vanvleit (talk) 6:53, 12 September 2006 (PST)

[edit] Rambot question

So how does he do it? Let me tell you why I asked: check out Diarmuid_Fionntain_O'Scannlain which I creating by essentially pasting http://air.fjc.gov/servlet/tGetInfo?jid=1803, a PD USGov site. 90%+ of Federal Judges on WP are redlinks, which is a shame, since they're all notable, interesting, and all the bios of all congress-confirmed federal judges of all time are available in PD in the same form (meaning that a bot could upload it) online. So do you think a bot can swing it? Rambot? Thoughts? Thanks. - CrazyRussian talk/email 04:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

This would be great! I've been creating articles on various federal judges using the entries on that site and this would be helpful. Question for Crzrussion: Would you suggest that we include all historical federal judges or just current ones? My personal goal is to have at least a stub on each First Circuit, Second Circuit, and SDNY judge within the next month or so. Regards, Newyorkbrad 16:07, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rambot demographics suggestion/question

Are there sources that you could use to add housing and cost of living information to city articles? They are common counterpoints in non-wikipedia articles on median income, and would provide valuable context to other information that you already include in automatically generated demographics sections. MrZaiustalk 19:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I'll look into this for future work. -- RM 21:23, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RamBot for Bengali wikipedia

Hi Ram-Man, I was wondering if we could make use of your rambot in Bengali Wikipedia. We currently have almost no US city/county related pages there. If your bot is still active, I can help with creating the templates for the city/county articles in Bengali script. Thanks. --Ragib 08:18, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm working on restarting the rambot, but it's painfully slow. Most people do not have the patience for such things. -- RM 21:24, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Approved request

In general, please try to let them stay transcluded for a few days or until the operator is aware. In this case it doesn't matter, but I just want to make sure that things flow smoothly for those requesting approval.Voice-of-All 18:52, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Once a bot has been approved and a bot flag granted, there is really nothing left to say. Adding it to the list of approved bots is sufficient at the bottom of the page is sufficient. All the links are available to the approved tasks. Leaving on the request list implies that there is still more to be done. -- RM 23:09, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Anon delinking

Hi Ram-Man... we've not met but I've long been a fan. Saw your siggy at m:Requests for permissions/CommonsDelinker. You may want to see m:Talk:Requests for permissions/CommonsDelinker because one of the key points of the proposal is that the bot would run anon... managing 701 different userids is a lot. ++Lar: t/c 01:09, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help.

Hello,

I uploaded this image, but I forget to put the license. How can I do it now? I tryed to edit, but I can't put the license. What can I do? Thank you,

[edit] Pa Maps

Hey, love the maps.

How can I arrange them so that they fit better with the pages? Are they an aligned image? On lots of the articles, the top right corner of the page consisted of a general overview picture from the town. When your map was applied, it got underlayed with the editing link and some text. --Cngodles 18:09, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

The template I am using uses a wikitable to arrange the two pictures. I'm not exactly sure how to resolve this problem myself. The wide majority of articles do not have this issue, however. -- RM 21:27, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:LostBot

Thank you Ram-Man. It will take me a few days to post the trial results. I request you to bear with me till then. Regards -- Lost(talk) 04:49, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Oh no problem. I only say that because lately people have been running trials but not posting the results. This only results in delays for the bot operator to get approved. But you can take all the time you need, as your request will just be ignored by BAG members until you post the results (that is, it won't take up our time). -- RM 04:50, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FANSTARbot

i just noticed that my bot is approved for interwiki`s, but i think it`s still locked. what now? FANSTAR 11:05, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Locked? What do you mean? It was operating on October 10, 2006 last according to the contributions and there is no block on the bot. I'm not sure what problem you might be having. -- RM 00:01, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
i mean blocked, my home ip adress is blocked. FANSTAR 08:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Were you banned for some reason? If so, please see the person who banned your IP address, as I have no idea what IP address you are using. You could also tell me what the IP Address is as well. -- RM 12:02, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Situation taken care of. I originally blocked FANSTARbot (see Blocking policy and Bot Policy), and have now removed the block on FANSTARbot and the autoblock. Thanks! ~Kylu (u|t) 01:23, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
thank you! FANSTAR 14:00, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My name on bots

I'm not sure how I got on that page. I might have added myself sometime ago. I wrote takwerbot2, and work with Tawker on bot ideas and questions. Its probably why I was on there in the first place. joshbuddy, talk 03:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Tawker added you, but that explains a lot. Shall we remove your name from the list or do you have a desire to become active in the process? -- RM 11:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Future census data

I've been tinkering with the Fort Hood article, and was thinking that editor changes to the articles at the wrong spot could make it difficult or impossible for Rambot to update demographic and other data, such as when the 2010 census is published. How about creating a template for this? That way, the template could be tinkered with to fix wording or spelling problems and create a more standardized look, and rambot would only have to adjust the figures listed in the template.

I've been working on Template:Update after with Rick Block, and have learned that some interesting things can be done with templates.

--Scott McNay 12:48, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

This has been discussed before, but nothing ever done on the topic. I'm not entirely sure whether a template is a good idea, since it is just a large amount of data and it isn't very readable for normal users who want to add information to an individual article. As for updating the articles, little changes here and there will have to be dealt with manually. It will be interesting, no doubt, but the wide majority of rambot-added articles have a consistent look-and-feel, so it shouldn't be too bad. -- RM 15:02, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Taichung City

I am new on WikiProject Cities. I have added considerable content to the first city I am working on, which happens to be the city of my residence, Taichung City. Would you mind taking a few minutes to look it over and leave comments on how you think I can make it better to bring it up to WikiProject Cities standards in a section of the discussion page for the city’s article page that I have set up.

Thank you. Ludahai 03:39, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
