Ramat Aviv
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ramat Aviv is the name of several neighbourhoods which are located in the northwest district of the City of Tel Aviv, north of the Yarqon River. Unofficially, the name is sometimes used for the entire city district 1, that is the northwestern district of Tel Aviv.
Four neigbhorhoods in Tel Aviv carry the name Ramat Aviv: Ramat Aviv Hayeruka (also Ramat Aviv Aleph or just Ramat Aviv), Neve Avivim (infrequently called Ramat Aviv Bet), Ramat Aviv Gimmel and Ramat Aviv Hachadasha ("The New Ramat Aviv"). The latter is located directly to the west of Neve Avivim. To the west of Ramat Aviv Gimmel is Ezorei Chen ("The Zones of Hanna Neheman"). Currently, Ezorei Chen is being expanded into three areas including Gimmel Hachadasha (the New Ramat Aviv Gimmel), Migdaley Chen (the Towers of Chen) and Medoragey Chen (also known as Ezorei Chen 2 or the New Towers of Ezorei Chen). To the west of Ramat Aviv Hayeruka, lies the Tochnit Lamed neighborhood (or simply "Lamed").
Adjacent to Ramat Aviv Hayeruka and Neve Avivim are Tel Aviv University and two important museums: the Land of Israel Museum, Beit Hatefutsot (the Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora). A little further are the Airport of Tel Aviv for domestic flights (Sde Dov Airport), the Reading power station with some art studios, the Tel Aviv Exhibition Centre and the Yarqon Park.
Ramat Aviv Gimmel was the title of a popular Israeli TV show, modelled on Beverly Hills 90210.
[edit] History
Before the 1948 Arab-Israeli War the Palestinian village al-Shaykh Muwannis (Arabic الشيخ مؤنس) was situated in the Ramat Aviv area.[1] Tel Aviv University was built on lands of the former village. One of the last remaining houses today functions as the university clubhouse.[2]
