Ramagundam

Ramagundam (including Godavarikhani Town} is a municipality in the Karimnagar district of northern Andhra Pradesh, India. It has a population of 235,540 (agglomeration 236,623 (2001 census}.

Ramagundam is situated in the Godavari Valley coalfields and has one of India's largest thermal power stations, run by NTPC. Ramagundam Airport code is RMD.

The town Ramagundam gets its name from combination of two words (Rama + Gundam). A famous temple of Hindu god lord Rama is situated in old part of the town and Gundam means water springs(not a gaint robotgundam). Ramagundam is connected to major parts of the State through well connected Road, Rajiv Rahadari(Freeway of Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi) in remembrance of Gandhi family and the Party he hailed from(Congress I). Ramagundam is connected through the South Central Railways(SCR[1]) which connects to all Four Metropolitan Cities of (India(Delhi,Chennai,Calcutta,Mumbai). Most of the trains passing through this route stops in Ramagundam. The nearest airport (other than unused RDM) is around 250 km(Hyderabad-HYD) away and connected through Highway NH-7 via Karimnagar and Siddipet.

Ramagundam is considered as Manchester of India in light of the companies around it . Namely, FCI: Fertilizer city of India, Kesoram Cement, Basanth Nagar, NTPC[2]: National Thermal Power Corporation(RSTPS-Ramagundam super thermal power station) sourcing 2600 MW of power 24/7, APSEB unit Ramagundam, Around 24 units of Coal mines belt in Godavarikhani stretching 25 km including opencasts(state of the art Proclainers are used in these open coal mines. (Pruthvi Banjan is the name given by Late Shri N. T. Rama Rao, then the Chief minister of Andra Pradesh), Thermal station for Godavarikhani community.

There are more factories around this place that takes the raw material from the coalmines and prepares carbon derivatives.

River Godavari flowing through this region gave this a strategic location for all these companies providing employment to more than 15 thousand people. With the lack of environment safety plans(Which is a controversy topic anyway) this place has become a mayhem for all health related issues across all the people in this community. The temperature is hotter than most places in India. 40 Degree Celsius is a normal temperature in any summer. NTPC[3] has developed a technique to reduce the temperature by reducing the Carbon dioxide in its emissions and helped reduce the average temperature by 2 degrees from last one decade. NTPC has a policy of hiring full tim employer according to the production capacity. For the records its present employers should not be more than 2600.

NTPC ramagundam is considered to be one of the best in the nation(24locations). NTPC is divided into 5 regions: Ramgundam falls in southernregion along with Simhadri and Kayakulam. This provides major chunk of power supply to Dadar Nagar Haveli, Daman & Dui, PGCIL(Powergrid Corporation of India Limited [4]).(PGCIL has a capacity of 9500MW and expects to grow into 30,000MW by 2012 with a 16 billion USD investment). Less than 25% of the power is provided to the State of Andhra Pradesh More than 38000 crores are invested to build this massive rganisation which provides employemnt to more than 6000. Recently 7th unit was added(August 2004) with additional capacity of 500MW. NTPC Ramagundam has exemplary vision for the environment which icludes afforestation, monitoriny environment impacts using NRSA satellite imaging services, Ash pond treatment, Ash brick plants, awareness of environment to the local community. NTPC Limited is the largest thermal power generating company of India. A public sector company, it was incorporated in the year 1975. NTPC is registered as a consultant with several leading international development and financial institutions around the world.NTPC is owned 89.5% by the Government of India, having listed 10.5% of its shares on stock exchanges in 2004 [5]. NTPC is classified as a 'Navratna' (a cash-rich) company, meaning it may run its operations independently and raise commercial financing without explicit government nod.

Ramagundam has good Educational institues: Government PG college. Kendriya vidyalaya. St Claire convent School. Sacred Heart School. Chinmaya Vidayalaya. Sindhura College of Engineering &Technology(est:2001) Vivekananda Institute of Technology and Science(est:2004) Godavarikhani and Jyothinagar are the two major Telecom Exchange facilities available around this region. APSRTC is wellconnecteda cross all communities of this region[6] NTPC Limited has been ranked 463 in the Forbes Global 2000, a listing of the world’s top public companies. It has the state of the art Control room instrumentation facility. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between NTPC Limited and IIT Delhi for a two-year M.Tech programme on “Power Generation Technology” at IIT Delhi 7 June, 2006. NTPC has gained accoldes for its highest quality of Disaster management polocies. Lesser the count of trips due to grid distrubance can be a measure of operation effectiveness. RSTPS has less than 10 distrubances in 2005-2006 and non last more than a day.[7]
