[edit] Theories
The nub of his thesis is that the early Israelites were actually the Hyksos pharaohs of Egypt, a theory originally proposed by the 1st century AD historian, Josephus Flavius (Contra Apion I:224). This concept has been greatly expanded upon by Ellis to encompass all of Judaic history up until the time of the Babylonian exile, and set out in five books which have been translated into seven languages.
Ellis' research requires much of biblical history to be interchangeable with Egyptian history and for the Israelites to have originally been Hyksos-Egyptian polytheists. However, it also seeks to demonstrate that most biblical events and characters can be found in the known historical record, and consequently it seeks to affirm the historical veracity of the biblical accounts. A review of one of the books in Ancient Egypt Magazine clearly highlights these conflicting issues, and balances both sides of this dichotomy (The reviewer, Michael Tunnicliffe, is a theologian and egyptologist).
