Rajivan Ayyappan

Rajivan Ayyappan works independently as a sound artist, composer for dance, and sound designer for film and multi-media. His work primarily moves around and explores the contemporary realms of music, sound and auditory experiences. Performance, installation and design are the avenues through which he applies and practices his musical thinking. Recent projects include: The Air Around – a global network/real-time performance installation with 213 sound artists from around the world and Signals untitled – an installation based on travel maps from Bangalore.
Other projects include sound design for Bollywood productions including, The Rising made by Ketan Mehta, 15 Park Avenue by Aparna Sen, and Itself – commissioned by the Snagged and Clored choreographic project at the Royal Opera House and choreographed by Saju Hari. In 1998 he received an award from the Indian Foundation of Arts for a performing arts exploration project with contemporary dancers from India and in 2001, and for another work entitled upside down singing – a mixed media performance created in collaboration with the Bauls of Bengal.
As a composer, Ayyappan draws on diverse musical and visual art cultures as points of reference. He was born in Kerala, lives a nomadic life.
