[edit] Character synopsis
Raimundo (also know as Rai) is the Xiaolin Dragon of Wind. He is a brash, hot, streetwise kid, the jokester of the team, and though he is considered more self-centered than the rest, he can be quite loyal to his own friends and pretty selfless and kind-hearted at times. Raimundo sleeps with a teddy bear named Ninja Fred, who is a "good luck charm". He also wears a medallion around his neck, the significance of which has yet to be revealed. Raimundo grew up at a Brazilian circus, which is why he is good at acrobatics, although he does not use this ability as often as he could. He also seems to like hip-hop and rap, since in some episodes he is shown listening to rap on CD players and boom-boxes and he also sometimes talks in hip-hop slang.
His battle style may be based on Capoeira (the Afro-Brazilian fighting style practiced by Christie Monteiro and Eddy Gordo from the Tekken fight game series), which originated in Brazil and uses kicks and sweeping motions along with numerous acrobatics.
There is some confusion as to the pronunciation of his first name (even within the show), particularly the first three letters. Sometimes it is pronounced like the word "ray," and other times like the word "rye." As both pronunciations are used within the show, it is unclear which is correct (although, being a Brazilian character, the latter would seem to be correct).
[edit] Character personality
The young Brazilian can be best described as "carefree as a breeze". He is streetwise, as competent with technology as Kimiko, acts like a bully towards Omi, and a jokester. Raimundo can be prone to daydreaming and is lazy, always seeking the shortcut to greater fame or to getting the chores done. Once he even used the Shroud of Shadows to hide the dishes.
Raimundo can be quite cynical, often making sarcastic comebacks. He is all too happy to make comments on Omi's style of talking and sometimes teases Omi because of it. Raimundo is also the more self-centered member of the team, thinking of himself most of the times. His pet peeve is a multi-eyed jellyfish, which was a legend from Raimundo's village. His worst fear is not being strong enough to save his friends. He has broken the fourth wall on one occasion in the episode "Hannibal's Revenge"; when Master Fung says, "Hannibal and Wuya have joined forces and it will be the end of the world", Raimundo replies with "Where have I heard that before? Oh Yeah," he puts his eyes toward the screen while they turn into the Xiaolin Showdown logo and says "Previously on Xiaolin Showdown." Everybody onscreen then gave a brief thumbs-up.
He loves the city of Rio de Janeiro, surfing, beaches, and warm climates and like the stereotypical image of a Brazilian. He is quite obsessed with soccer and surfing. It was recently revealed in a showdown with a T-rex (oil in the family) that he has an apptitude for chess.
[edit] Character history
After joining the Xiaolin Temple, Raimundo helps with the chores (though often complaining of them) and worked with the other Xiaolin Dragons In-Training to stop Wuya from getting her hands on Shen Gong Wu.
After a severe bout of daydreaming, Raimundo once managed to lose the Sword of the Storm to an obese ninja by the name of Tubbimura. However, the guilt of losing the Shen Gong Wu made him retreat to study more about the Shen Gong Wu, where he discovered the act of Shen Yi Bu Dare. He re-challenged Tubbimura and managed to defeat him with his newfound knowledge of Shen Gong Wu. The Sword of the Storms went on to be his trademark Shen Gong Wu.
Later, during an assault by Mala Mala Jong, Raimundo displayed his sense of justice by going back to the Temple, against Master Fung's orders to stay hidden and protect the remaining Shen Gong Wu. Not only did Mala Mala Jong defeat him, but also he was the only Dragon-in-training not to advance to the apprentice level due to his disobedience. This combined with Omi's overbearing pride over his new position left him angry and caused him to leave the Xiaolin Temple, only to be tempted by Wuya to join the Heylin side.
Upon doing so, he used the Reversing Mirror and Serpent's Tail to give Wuya back her flesh and her magical powers. He replaced Jack Spicer as her "right-hand man" and stood by her side as she conquered the world.
However, he soon realized his mistake of failing to convince both his former friends to join the Heylin side and Wuya to let them live. He used the Chinese puzzle box made by Grand Master Dashi to seal Wuya away again. After setting things right, he was offered his role as a Xiaolin apprentice, but declined believing he was not ready for the position. He managed to achieve Apprentice status when he helped rescue the other monks and Jack Spicer when they were captured by Panda Bubba in their first encounter with the crime boss.
One day, when the Heylin Comet passed over the temple, Master Fung told Raimundo and the other monks not to use Shen Gong Wu while the comet was in orbit for the next three days because the Shen Gong Wu would have a mind of their own. Raimundo disobeyed Master Fung so he could save his hometown from a volcano eruption (which Jack and Wuya purposely caused). The Golden Tiger Claws were stuck on him first. Having done that, the Wu took over his body and made him a Shen Gong Wu Warrior, who Wuya took over. Omi, Kimiko, and Clay fought Wuya, Raimundo's will awakened and slipped through the weakness.
Much later, Raimundo and his friends stay at Guan's temple, where they go through tough training. Guan tells them one of them will be offered the Treasure of the Blind Swordsman by Hannibal Bean and while Omi is confident it is he, it turns out to be Raimundo. He steals the Shen Gong Wu for Hannibal Bean and is challenged to a showdown against Omi. Soon after it starts (so far Raimundo is winning), Guan calls a Shen Yi Bu All-In and Hannibal Bean accepts wagering all his Wu and the Treasure of the Blind Swordsman. After Omi barely fights back, Raimundo acts like it has actually hurt him and performs a Xiaolin Showdown Dive (surrendering). He and Master Monk Guan tell the others that it was their plan all along to trick Hannible into giving him the Treasure of the Blind Swordsman. Guan loves how he preformend the plan and gives him one his favorite Spear's of Guan out of the roomful of them (#384).
When they were still at Guan's temple, Hannibal Bean stole two specific Shen Gong Wu, the Shadow of Fear and the Sapphire Dragon. Using these two Wu, Hannibal Bean brought Raimundo's worst fear to life ,which showed as the jellyfish, and combined it with the Sapphire Dragon. The monks all tried to keep him awake after finding out what was going on, but none of their tries helped. When the Shadow Slicer revealed itself, Raimundo and his inner-self (the part of him that's afraid) fought Hannibal Bean in the Showdown his friends were in. He beat Hannibal Bean and overcame the memories he saw in his mind.
When Omi almost destroyed the space-time continuum in his desperation to become Xiaolin Leader, and after Chase told him to act as the leader Raimundo demonstrated unparalleled courage and resilience in the showdown that took place by making wise descisions according to their elements and the shen-gong-wu and putting his head on the rope (neck on the line) to protect his friends. Once Omi unfroze himself and set things straight, Master Fung chose Raimundo as Shoku Warrior or Leader in this case for his actions, magically granted a new robe. Omi was understandably upset at first, but followed his friend as leader with a huge smile.
Raimundo is known to have the largest family of all the Xiaolin Monks, mentioning eight siblings and numerous aunts and uncles. To date, none of these relatives have been seen, making him the only Xiaolin Dragon whose family has yet to have been revealed. Kimiko's father has been seen in "The Return of PandaBubba", Clay's father in "As Big as Texas", his Granny Lily in "Dreamscape", and his sister in the "Black Vipers", and Omi's so-called parents which turned out to be Jack-bots (under the influence of the Moby Morpher) that were part of a trap set by Jack, Hannibal, and Wuya in "Omi Town".
[edit] Raimundo and the Xiaolin apprentices
Raimundo's history with the other Xiaolin apprentices has been rather colorful. He has developed a sort of brotherly relationship with Clay Bailey, the Xiaolin Dragon of Earth, being the only other male who is able to understand his lifestyle; the two are often conversing with one another concerning Omi or Kimiko when either is in the spotlight. Raimundo has developed a deep sense of dissent towards Omi, due to the Xiaolin dragon of Water's overbearing sense of pride and ultra-inflated ego, but nevertheless considers him his friend. It was these traits that often disrupted Raimundo in his training or pushed him away from the temple, both of which Omi fails to recognize. Nevertheless, they do tend to connect on occasions. Omi may have a lot to do with Raimundo's faults, but they have their moments. No matter what they go through they always seem to end up on good terms. When Omi became Omi-cat a tear rolled of Raimudo's face as they were forced to leave him with Chase. They are constant rivals but take pleasure in the competition because it keeps both of them (as Clay would say it) quick on the draw. Raimundo is on overall very good friend with Kimiko because for one, he doesn't belittle her abilities such as Omi does for being a female, and he is the most updated on technology next to her, although Kimiko is often exasperated with Raimundo's antics and attitude toward certain situations. Several episodes hint at Raimundo having a crush on her and she has actually kissed him twice (once for saving the world and returning to the Xiaolin side, and once for becoming Shoku Warrior).
[edit] Raimundo as the Xiaolin Dragon of Wind
As the Dragon of Wind, Raimundo often combines his powers with Omi's and Kimiko's powers to make the attacks stronger. He most often uses the Sword of the Storm in assaults, and the Eye of Dashi and Falcon's Eye in showdowns. After helping to defeat Hannibal Roy Bean in an attempt to take every Shen Gong Wu, he received the Spear of Guan #384, thusly becoming the second Xiaolin/Wudai Dragon-in-training (other than Omi) to possess a Spear of Guan. His element strike is Typhoon Boom. His Wudai attack is Wudai Star — Wind. Since becoming a Wudai Warrior, Raimundo has also gained the ability to fly using his wind element at times. He can combine his element with (so far) the Sword of the Storm and the Eye of Dashi. His Wudai weapon is called the Blade of the Nebula, a sword that changes into a swirling hurricane attached to a chain, similar to nunchucks. He is also, according to Master Monk Guan, going to become the leader of the Xiaolin Dragons, which is proven correct in the final episode of season three. His elemental Shen Gong Wu is called the Crest of the Condor. By using the Crest of the Condor with the Blade of the Nebula, the sword can use its control over the wind like the Sword of the Storm can, but with far greater power. Also Raimundo is the only known character to have gone to Orion form without the help of the other monks. However seeing as he punched a hole in a mountain with his wind powers it might have just been the fact that he was in his dream world. The final shen gong wu he uses is the Cannon Blaster.
[edit] Raimundo and his Enemies
The first enemy he probably made was Wuya when he betrayed her and trapped her in a Magic Puzzle Box. But there is a greater foe...Hannibal Roy Bean. The main reason for this was that in the Return of Master Monk Guan, Raimundo tricked Hannibal into losing the Treasure of the Blind Swordsman by first joining him and then betraying him. Hannibal probably picked Raimundo for his next stunt for this sole reason. Hannibal got into Raimundo's mind and caused his worst fear to come to life and Raimundo ended up defeating him in his dreams. Not a big hint but also in Time After Time(2,) Hannibal and Raimundo are the ones who go for the Eye of Dashi.
