Category talk:Railway stations in the United Kingdom

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This category should ideally become only a holding category for regional ones, based loosely on counties. When most sub-cats have been set-up the {{UKrailwaystations}} template needs removing from this category so articles aren't duplicated.

I know this only covers England. With Wales and Scotland I think logical groups of the current administratvie areas would be best as a category with only two or three entries is pointless, particularly in West and mid Wales there are relatively few stations. My knowledge of Scotland is not good enough to propose a sensible system. Thryduulf 02:13, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

This seems like an excellent system. Category:Railway stations in Berkshire looks like a good model to be followed. - SimonP 02:41, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
In England, an advantage of [[:Category:Railway stations in <county>]] is that it can be made a subcategory of [[:Category:Transport in <county>]]. In Scotland and Wales, would one category each be an acceptable size? Susvolans 09:23, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I think one category each for Scotland and Wales would be enough for now. But if you want to divide Scotland up into areas larger than the 32 current unitary authorities, I would suggest the Regions of Scotland. Vclaw 16:14, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
I think a Category:Railway stations in Wales with the extant Category:Railway stations in Cardiff as a subcategory would work. Category:Railway stations in Scotland would probably be best, any areas (Edinburgh and Glasgow?) that have a significant number/density of railway stations can have a sub-category from there. Should the county categories above be made a subcategory of a Category:Railway stations in England for balance? Thryduulf 17:56, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
The problem with Glasgow is what area does that cover? Is it just the City of Glasgow council area, or the Greater Glasgow conurbation, or somewhere in between? Instead, I suggest Category:Railway stations in Strathclyde, i.e. the area covered by Strathclyde Passenger Transport. Category:Railway stations in Edinburgh would be fine, but it's not needed yet as it seems there's only 2 articles about stations in Edinburgh. Vclaw 21:48, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
The category Category:London railway stations should probably be renamed Category:Railway stations in London. Our Phellap 16:39, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Although clearly not all of England's counties' stations' categories are cited in the above list I find extremely frustrating that the currently used all show the previous en next stations instead of the first and last stations which are usually used as references rather than some unknown and anonymous station. After all the line's page is there to browse each and every station of a line as well as the area's station category.
Also for ease of reading table should be used as a last resort and the information included in the article main part sorted in relevant content chapters. Captain scarlet 20:52, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

I've started to split the Commons:Category:Train stations in the United Kingdom in the same way as this one. I've categorised all images/sub cats and England, Scotland and Wales. I've also done some but not all of the splitting of England into counties. Any help with the rest would be much appreciated. 13:41, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
