[edit] Bangladesh image use

hi, what is the official policy on image use in Bangladesh. There are tags for Indian-PD and Pak public domain images in Wikipedia, but none for Bangladesh and I wish to upload some old images and want to know the laws. Do u have any idea on this? Idleguy 06:05, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ragib bhai. Could you create two separate templates for portal:Bangladesh. I have no idea about these. So please try it. At the moment all the features overlapped each other and its like a bit of Ho-jo-bo-ro-lo now.Tarif from Bangladesh 16:16, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help needed

Hi Ragib,

I need a little help with Bengali langauge. I am having trouble typing "Mukherjee". When typed, it renders as: মুখর্জী। The 'rr' is coming over 'জ', while it should actually come after the 'I'. How do I rectify this. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 06:59, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I don't understand what the problem. If you add the "rr" (called "ref" in Bangla), it is supposed to go over the previous consonant. So, here, the ref is correctly coming over জ rather than the ী. So, the correct rendering of the word is মুখার্জী. --Ragib 00:59, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
If you think that is correct then there is no problem. I may have been misled as when we write in Hindi, the correct rendering is "मुखर्जी" (notice the location of 'ref' here). Thanks anyway, — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:40, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I guess it's a script issue ... i.e. Hindi and Bengali have different ways of doing this :) --Ragib 17:49, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:Vidya Balan

Dude, I have to agree with Bharatveer there. Zora has a nasty habit of making extremely annoying accusations of "political ploys"/"censorship"/"perpetrating massacre" . You know bothering him only pisses him off more. You may also note, that Deepujoseph agrees with him fully there. Its not like Zora has a real argument. Her argument in simple terms is: "you guys are anti-Muslim". I cant speak for bharat, but deepu and I certainly are not, and neither is Bharatveer unless prodded to get pissed.Bakaman Bakatalk 03:45, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Marakkar Stamp

The Stamp you deleted from the Marakkalage page was not put there for its philatelic value. It was there to illustrate what a Marakkar looks like.

Do you have any other reason for removing it ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 222.165.178.163 (talk • contribs).

That exactly is the reason why it was removed. A stamp cannot be used for any other purpose than to illustrate the stamp itself. In other words, you cannot use a stamp to illustrate the subject depicted in the stamp. It is ok if the stamp is used in a philatelic article on the stamp itself. See Fair use criteria. Thanks. --Ragib 16:00, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you Ragib for your reply but I have gone through the above Fair use criteria and can't find anything that says "A stamp cannot be used for any other purpose than to illustrate the stamp itself. In other words, you cannot use a stamp to illustrate the subject depicted in the stamp. It is ok if the stamp is used in a philatelic article on the stamp itself.". No other image of that type of boat is availabel either. What do you suggest ? --124.43.221.101 12:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually, you can do that after the article has been unprotected. It is unethical to edit an article using admin privileges while it is protected. Once the protection has been removed, I'll do what you've suggested above. Thanks. --Ragib 20:02, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External links on Carnatic music

Hi Ragib, there have been some repeated attempts of inclusion of links to commercial websites and forum websites (owned by one of the editors of Carnatic music). I have been sort of battling these incusions which violate WP policy on conflict of interest. This user complained to WP:PAIN and the ruling found no cause for action against me. However I might have inadvertantly breached WP:3RR during the last 24 hours when removing these links. I would like to assure you that this was not an attempt of edit/revert warring with the other users, but a genuine desire to cleanup the mess. I'd like your opinion/advise regarding what action I need to take. - Parthi talk/contribs 23:14, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suranjit Sengupta

This look right at all? শোরোন্জিত সেন্গুপ্তো . I'm using a transliteration program for Hindi, and wanted to see if it worked for Bengali. I need your eyes because cant check myself on Bangla tho, for obvious reasons (the problem with me not being able to read it). The input I put in the program was "Shoronjit Sengupta".Bakaman Bakatalk 01:26, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

The correct Bangla name is: সুরঞ্জিৎ সেনগুপ্ত. The স is pronounced here as sh. thanks. --Ragib 01:37, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
In my trans program the bangla script actually shows up. I dont have SP2 so it doesnt show up in my browser (all I see in the browser is question marks). Can you add the correct script to the article?Bakaman Bakatalk 01:41, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Please check out http://bangla.org.bd . It has a transliterator form. Even if you don't have the fonts, you can type in, and then click on view as image to see how the unicode will look like in a configured system. Thanks. --Ragib 01:48, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bangla transliteration/transcription

Hey Ragib,

After the discussions on the use of vernacular scripts on wikipedia pages, I am looking to replace these, as far as possible with an appropriate transcription and transliteration (IPA or ITRANS). Unfortunatetly, I haven't been able to find a universally acceptable table for Bangla transcription - could you help me out here? Thanks. Gamesmaster G-9 17:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I think User:SameerKhan can help you with this (he's a linguist, so can do the IPA very well). As for non-Indian bios, especially Bangladeshi bio pages, there is actually no problem with the Bangla script (since Bangla is virtually the Only script used in Bangladesh). Thanks. --Ragib 18:01, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jamuna Bridge

Is that the same as "Bangabandhu Bridge"? I read about a Bangabandhu bridge in a book on Bangladesh somewhere, and the purpose sounds similar to the Jamuna bridge.Bakaman Bakatalk 00:11, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it is named as the "Bangabandhu bridge". The official name is "Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge", though it is commonly referred to as just the Jamuna Bridge. Thanks. --Ragib 08:46, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I left this message with this user and I got this. He needs to understand that editing Wikipedia is a privilege not a right. He does not own his talk page. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:25, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I have blocked him for 48 hours because of disruption and threats. Of course, then he has threated to create a sock from the "Cybercafe across the street", and also to "Contact the owners of Wikipedia". Hope the cooling off period will allow him to get acquainted with rules and regulations and wikiquette. :) --Ragib 01:29, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Ragib - I shouldn't have interjected myself into this, but I did, and now I am frustrated with this person and his apparent bigotry, close-mindedness, incivility and disregard for policy and process. What can be done about it? He appears to be intractable. I'm going to follow the course of actively ignoring him, but that doesn't solve it for others. Never been involved in a conversation like this before on Wikipedia, wondering what the process is to remediate the situation. I know I'm speaking vaguely, so please ask me to clarify if necessary. Thanks,  Erielhonan  06:51, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
I suggest posting it to Administrator's noticeboard:incidents. The remedy will be longer blocks (if he continues his tirade against other editors), and possible protection of his talk page during his block period. Thanks. --Ragib 06:57, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll pursue this tomorrow when I have time to write a little.  Erielhonan  07:07, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ragib, as someone who has experience of our friend BV, you will understand how hard it is to keep civility when one gets hit with his abuses everyday. I will control myself. Thanks for your caution. - Parthi talk/contribs 10:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I understand fully, but it is always better to maintain the moral high ground. Please keep within policies, even if sometimes it is hard to do so. WP:NPA is a great policy, and we should always adhere to it. Thank you. --Ragib 10:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Scope of India project

Ragib, Have posted this at Nichalp's and Sundar's talk pages as well. Need your advise. You were part of the discussion on WT:INB about adding a pre-independence parameter to the India project banner so that it will represent the Indian-subcontinent. User:Szhaider feels we are claiming the history of South Asia for ourselves. He wants these articles to be under the scope of newly created Wikipedia:WikiProject History of South Asia. He created this project and he is the only member. He is engaging in edit war by removing the India project banners from articles that are tagged as Indian-history related. I would like your advise about how to proceed, should I report this to WP:ANI, or should India project scope be limited to only-post-indepedence articles since this user feels Pakistani Wikipedians will be offended seeing Ashoka Chakra and India project links on the article tag pages (For example: Talk:Taxila). Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:00, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks alot Ragib

Hey Ragib,I saw the warning you gave the fellow.

Sorry I got ticked off at you,but I was under the impression that you were playing along the "double game".Everyone looses their temper at times, but it doesnt reflect their personality.

I request the previous message I placed there be removed,I dont want to attract more unecessary attention.

And I request the previous messages on my page be removed as they dont contain all that pleasant content.

Last of all I request to be allowed to post on the history of Bangladesh page,in order to remind people how guilty we Pakistanis are for the 1971 war.

Again thanks alot.

[edit] Teamwork to spread knowledge.

Ragib,I have unfortunately fallen into the trap of "battle ground" laid out by some fanatics, who have come here for the mere purpose of mixing their POV with facts. I realise that responding in a "tit-for-tat" manner is exactly what they seek in order to turn wikipedia into the "battle ground" I reffered to,but rather a calm-manner(which hurts these attention seeking people the most)combined with facts. I am proud of the contributions I have made to wikipedia and will continue to do so. My request to you is simple:

-keep an eye on user/administrator Fowler&Fowler to prevent furthur violations. -keep an eye on the South Asian talk pages for any foul language or vandalism(which was made against me but ignored by administrator Fowler&Fowler) -keep a lock on hisory of India page until disputes are resolved.

I am on a mission on wikipedia and I invite you to join my mission by stating the objectives:

-to spread knowledge and truth

-to combat hostile users and corrupt administrators.

-to combat the growth of propaganda

-to combat any form of corruption

-to seperate fact form POV

-to fight hegimony of all forms

We can acheive all these objectives by working together and not by falling into the "battle-ground" as I have fallen into.

Questions: -Is it okay for me to post on a Bangladeshi talk page?(I know Im pakistani) -How do I post a POV check gem if I am unable to

Thanks alot for you help and support.Nadirali 01:49, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Nadirali

Thanks, but I am sorry, I'm not into forming groups/alliances in wikipedia. Such alliances are evil, because they often degenerate into POV pushing itself. Wikipedia is not a battleground, we all are here to write an encyclopedia, and if we stick to it irrespective of our ethnic or religious preferences, we can achieve that.
I've left the welcome message in your talk page, please read the policies because they are important. Please look into WP:NPOV, WP:CIVIL, WP:3RR, WP:NPA etc policies. Also Verifiability. By following these policies, it is possible to do constructive edits and make wikipedia better. I hope you'd make good, constructive contributions. I am not into any alliance with anyone; being on the side of WP:NPOV, WP:V is good enough. Thanks. --Ragib 05:03, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

That's what I meant,to keep off hegimony, false or harmful propaganda etc. and keep wikipedia as neutral as possible. It ws not my intention to invite you into an "alliance",but to work with me(and all progressive users)to improve this site and keep it going. Thanks for giving me links.Best regards Nadirali 05:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Nadirali

[edit] Somone removed the warning from my talk page

Hi Ragib,I dont know who removed the personal attack warning from my talk page, but it was removed.

Yes that user is quite abusive.I have seen him use words such as "pussy" on india talk pages while administrator/user:Fowler&Fowler simply ignored him, which is why I ask you to watch him.

The things he wrote in capital letters which(was it you?) told him was considered "yelling".

Also, the reason why I got ticked off was I thought you were allowing others to vandalize my comments and write these hateful messages while watching me.Now I see how wrong I was. After you showed me the hateful messages you removed written by him,I realise how wrong I was about you and your intentions.

[edit] Problem with user Seema0300

I wanted to get your attention towards the activities of the mentioned user. He/she has been continously replacing the article Balochistan conflict completely with a new one containing clear anti-Pakistani government POV. Although the original contents of the article also contain POV and has been tagged for its neutrality status but no better version is provided by any editor. The above mentioned user has been continously vandalizing the article. If you look at the contributions of the editor, you will come come to know that he/she is only interested in articles related to Balochistan conflict and nationalism. [edit] Use of stamp image in Chembai

Hi Ragib can you please see Chembai and verify whether the stamp image used there fits the guidelines for appropriate use? Thanks Parthi talk/contribs 09:54, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

The tag you applied incorrectly, was Newspapercover, which states:
This image is of a scan of a newspaper page or article, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by either the publisher of the newspaper or the individual contributors who worked on the articles or images depicted. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of newspaper pages

  • with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above,
  • on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Copyrights for more information.
As you can see, your use of the image is not valid under fair use criteria. Therefore, it doesn't qualify as Fair use. Thank you. --Ragib 19:47, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blcoked user reverting Copyvio messages anonymously

Hi Ragib, Please see this. User:Srkris who is under one week block has been editing anonymously and removing copyvio messages. - Parthi talk/contribs 01:36, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Ragib, thanks for your concerns. This issue is being currently handled by an admin ([see User_talk:Utcursch). User:Venu62 is trying to precipitate the issue by drawing the attention of several admins at once. This doesnt mean you can't or shouldn't act on it, but my suggestion is it's not necessary for more than a single admin to bother with the same thing. I am not a vandal and I have good reasons to protect my content which is allowed on Wikipedia under fair use considerations. Please see User_talk:Utcursch. Cheers. 59.92.83.63 14:54, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

It is not any one user's content to 'protect'. The question is how can an editor, blocked for incivility, copyright violations, bad faith, etc can circumvent the block by simply not logging in. If this is allowed then anyone can do anything. thanks Parthi talk/contribs 19:13, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Also, Ragib, I'd like to request you to warn Parthi to stop his mudslinging against srkris. He has no proof that the anon ip is srkris and yet even after his attempts for a checkuser were ignored by the checkuser admins, he's acting like he has solid proof that the ip and srkris are the same and is continuing with his shameless mudslinging. Neither the ip nor srkris have done anything against the rules of wikipedia and whatever disputes there may be they are all still under consideration and deliberations. User:Venu62 has no right to appropriate the moral high ground for himself and the reason i am intervening(note that I had scrupulously stayed out of this for nearly 2 months and have entered it only in the last couple of days) is because his private fight with srkris is spilling over everywhere and disrupting constructive editing.
And as far as srkris' supposed copyvios are concerned, I'd just like to say that as one who has attempted to upload pics unsuccessfully in the past, all the rules concerning uploading pics are very very vague for people new to uploading pics. As an admin, I'd like you to discuss this with other admins on irc perhaps, and come up with better wording for what is permissible and what is not. As it stands now, there's just too many vague rules and guidelines out there. Thanks. Sarvagnya 23:06, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Srkris has no defense concerning any Wikipedia policies he has violated, due to the fact he was already recommended by an admin to Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user when he was given his final warning [[3]] and blocked [[4]]. He chose not to follow the admin's advice, and has continued to unleash his POV, personal attacks and so on throughout Wikipedia, even after he has been blocked (I can give diffs if someone wants to dispute this). His constant disregard for Wikipedia policy, and constant refusal to fix his way of doing things here, should result in consequences, (otherwise, other Wikipedians would be entitled to get away with such behaviour, when they shouldn't).
