Turok: Rage Wars is a first-person shooter video game for the Nintendo 64 console, and can be thought of as Acclaim's answer to the major multiplayer-focused first-person titles coming out on the PC at the time (namely, Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament). The game supports up to four players, and bots (AI-controlled enemies or allies) can be added into the game if there are less then four players. It can be played solo as well. Like its predecessor, the game allowed use with the RAM Expansion Pak, but did not require it.

[edit] Game Modes
- Single Player Trials Mode - The game only begins with Turok, Adon, and the Bio Bot Elite available to play with. Through single player mode, one can unlock more characters. In the Single Player Campaign, the player is forced to go through a number of deathmatches through the various game mode types, and must face all four game bosses as well. Each character in the game must be played to the end of their campaign at least once to unlock other characters and rewards. Rewards include talismans that allow the character to gain more respawning life, hold more ammunition, and raise their maximum health.
- Two Player Trials Mode - Similar to the Single Player Campaign except two players work together through various game types to gain certain rewards. Some rewards can only be gained in the Two Player Campaign.
- Early copies of the game had a glitch however, that did not let players move further into the game. Even though a mission was completed in the Two Player Trials, the game would read it as a failed mission, and it would be impossible to move further on into the game.

- Bloodlust - Standard free-for-all deathmatch that can house two to four players
- Team Bloodlust - Players and bots could team up with one another in deathmatch. Up to four teams can be made (which would technically be a standard free-for-all then, but within team game-only maps).
- Capture the Flag - There is only one flag on different parts of a map. Two teams are trying to capture the flag and bring it into their bases. Once a flag point is scored, the flag reappears in another location on the map.
- Frag Tag - Returning from Turok 2, a random player is turned into a helpless monkey. All the other players must chase and kill the monkey to score points for themselves. To turn someone else into a monkey, the monkey player must find a platform to jump onto. There is also an item that the monkey player can pick up that turns all other players into monkeys, while the monkey player becomes a normal player again temporarily, allowing him/her to hunt everybody else.

- Joshua Fireseed: The current Turok, he goes to fight evil yet again. (Turok in Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Adon: The speaker for The Council of Voices, she fights to protect them. (from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Bio Bot Elite: One of the Primagens henchmen, and as stated in Turok 2, if the Primagen was killed, it would activate an order to wipe out all creatures in The Lost Land. (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Campaigner: Badly damaged from the battle with Tal'Set in Turok 1, he has more cybernetic implants. He seeks vengeance on him. (boss from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter)
- Fireborn: A fire version of a dinosoid, which were henchmen of the Primagen (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Lord of the Dead: A dead dinasoid. Apparently is the only survivor. (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Mantid Drone: An insect-like creature that served both The Campaigner and The Primagen (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Mantid Soldier: Stronger insects in the Mantid army (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Blind One Guardian: A creature that has no eyesight, but has great smelling and hearing (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Oblivion Spawn: A creature that served the Primagen and serves Oblivion. (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Purlinn Juggernaut: A cybernetic enhanced ape-like reptile. (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil)
- Raptor - (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil) The Raptor is a unique character in the game. It cannot carry any weapons at all and must slay enemies at close range with its claws. It can run at an incredible speed and leap large distances, making it a formidable opponent. Its secondary attack is a "jump claw" attack that is slow but may kill an enemy instantly.
- Mites: Small Mantid hatchlings - (guard from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil) The Mites are also a unique character. You are technically controlling a group of five mites, with one leading the bunch. They are fairly fast, and are small, so players will have to aim downward to fire at them. Their primary attack is to claw at enemies. Their secondary attack allows them to spit acid at enemies.
[edit] Boss Characters
(these characters are bosses in single player mode, but can become available to play by earning them)
- Bastille: A former soldier in The Lost Land. Wants to kill Turok to get back into the military - As a boss in the game, his armor generates an energy shield around him that must be destroyed a couple of times before he can be killed.
- Syra: A hunter paid to kill Turok - A mercenary woman sporting a faceless mask, she has a Purlinn Warclub servant hunt the player down while she attempts to snipe him/her from afar. After killing one of the two, the player must kill the other within a short amount of time or the other will be resurrected.
- Symbiont - An alien arachnid parasite species. As a boss, the player must face three of them at once, but only one of them is the real Symbiont boss that must be killed. Note: The backs of it looks like the Vampire Gun from Turok 3.
- Tal' Set - Has the same name as the Turok from the first game, although their connection is unclear. He is a unique character in that he actually has every single weapon in the game. However, unlike any of the other characters, he has no menu to select weapons from. They are randomly picked every time the player changes his/her weapon. As the final boss in the game, he also has robot guards appear as he disappears to recover for a bit if he is weakened.
[edit] Weapons
Before a game begins, all players (except Tal' Set, Raptor, and Mites) must choose five weapons they intend to use in battle. The available weapons to choose from are divided by three ammo types - bullet rounds, energy rounds, and explosive rounds. A player may only carry six pre-selected weapons in the game - a melee weapon (standard for all), two bullet weapons, two energy weapons, and one explosive weapon. All these weapons have a primary and secondary function. Additionally, there are four weapons that appear throughout the game that anybody may pick up and use (except the Raptor and Mites). This is a list of all the weapons in the game, divided by ammo type (this DOES NOT include the Raptor and Mites - see Characters above for a description of their abilities):
[edit] Melee
- Warhammer — All characters, except Raptor and Mites, have a Warhammer as their standard melee weapon. It's primary attack is a simple swing. The secondary attack charges the hammer up, so that its swing will do a considerable amount of extra damage.
[edit] Bullet Round Weapons
(A player must pick 2 of these)
- Mag 60 — An automatic handgun that fires three shots at once as its primary fire. The secondary function activates its laser sight, at the cost of some Energy Rounds. A major drawback of the laser sight is that the player is forced to remain stationary, but it allows for much farther range and helps in auto-targeting enemies, making it extremely accurate. It fires a powerful, single bullet in this mode which cuts any receiver's life by 50.
- Assault rifle — An assault rifle that fires a single shot in its primary mode to a high degree of accuracy. The secondary mode allows for a continuous burst of fire, at the cost of great accuracy.
- Shotgun — Has a slow rate of fire, and is weak from a distance. The primary function fires one double-barreled shot. The second function is a "Street Sweeper." When activated, the player loads in four shells, and when fired, four shots are released within two seconds, at the cost of some accuracy. It is powerful at close-range though, enough to completely kill an enemy with one four-shot burst.
- Minigun — Primary function allows for a continuous burst of fire. The secondary function actually creates a shield that makes the player invincible, at the cost of rapidly depleting one's Energy Rounds supply. This function is meant to keep the player stationary, but it is actually still possible to move. The controller configuration simply discourages the player from moving, as the player is forced to change his/her hands to an uncomfortably awkward position over the controller, to continue any movement whatsoever. A glitch with the shield is that it also continues to hold the effects of any Power Core (see below) for as long as the shield is activated. With the Infinite Ammo cheat though, this can make any player quite literally unstoppable.
[edit] Energy Round Weapons
(a player must pick 2 of these)
- Tek Crossbow — A variant of Turok's standard weapon makes a return. Its primary fire shoots a bolt. Its secondary firing allows for sniping, which allows for accuracy and extra damage.
- Plasma rifle — Its primary fire shoots a plasma energy shot. Its secondary function also allows sniping. Like the Tek Bow, this gives accuracy. However, the shots fired in this mode are less powerful than a standard shot. The sniping feature does allow rapid-fire though.
- Boomerang — This guided weapon can be thrown, and returns back to its wielder. This of course means there is a wait time that leaves the player vulnerable as the Boomerang returns, but it is a powerful weapon. Its secondary function allows it to put an enemy in slow motion for a short period of time. When the secondary function is used point blank, the player can rapidly cut an enemy to pieces, while avoiding their enemies sights by staying behind the enemy. This is the only non-pickup weapon in the game that can target players in other rooms. This allows the user to see where an enemy is coming from, before the enemy enters the room.
- Emaciator — This accurate weapon's primary fire allows for rapid-fire, and actually makes an enemy thinner with each shot, until they eventually wither away to death. If the player starts missing its target (which can be easy to do, since the target becomes harder to hit), or the target escapes, then he/she starts to regain their shape. It's secondary function is a charged shot, which, when released, makes it so the victim is constantly withering away. If the charged shot misses and hits a wall, it fragments itself and ricochets around a bit.
- Inflator — The complete opposite of the Emaciator - instead of making its victims thinner, it makes them fatter, to a point as to which they may eventually pop. It is a fairly accurate weapon, with a somewhat shorter rate of fire than its cousin weapon. With each dart fired, the enemy becomes an easier target. Its secondary fire is a charged shot that makes it so the victim is constantly expanding in size, so that eventually, a single shot may be enough to pop them.
- Freeze Gun — Its primary fire shoots a liquid nitrogen shot that can bounce off a surface once. This shot slows down the movement of an enemy temporarily. Its secondary fire will temporarily freeze an enemy in place completely. It can be shot directly at the target, or stuck on a surface, so that if an enemy touches the frost on the surface, they will freeze. This encourages strategic use of weapons, particularly with the Chest Burster. A blue mark is displayed on the screen of a frozen player.
- Chest Burster — A particularly popular weapon in the game. Its primary fire shoots a dart-like liquid that harms an enemy. The secondary function loads an alien embryo into its chamber. When fired, the embryo lays in the enemy for a duration of time. Eventually, the egg will hatch and an alien will burst out from the infected player's chest, Aliens-style. The embryo can be destroyed if the player who shot it is killed, or if a Power Core is picked up.
- Flare Gun — The gun shoots a radioactive light-sphere floating in the air. The closer one gets to the center of the sphere, the more damage they take. Its secondary fire creates a bigger, brighter, radioactive flare that rapidly depletes its victim’s health.
[edit] Explosive Round Weapons
(a player must pick 1 of these)
- Grenade Launcher — Launches a grenade that can bounce before it explodes. Its secondary function throws a grenade that detonates on impact.
- Scorpion Missile Launcher — A rocket launcher; its primary function fires a single rocket. Its secondary feature allows it to mark an X on any flat surface (walls, ceilings, floors, etc) that acts as magnet or repulsor. A rocket fired will either move toward the X, or away from it, depending on the player's choice of action.
- Napalm Gel — Fires a remote gel canister that can stick to any surface, including other players in the game. No more than three canisters may be fired before they must be detonated. The secondary function simply detonates the explosives.
[edit] Weapon Pickups
(weapons scattered around arenas that anyone, except Raptors and Mites, may use)
- PFM (Proximity Fragmentation Mine) Mine [sic] — A mine that can be planted on any flat surface. The mine detonates when a player gets too close to it.
- Sentry Turret — A player can place a mechanical turret on any flat surface that will fire on enemies nearby. It will not fire on teammates or the person who dropped it.
- Cerebral Bore — A popular weapon from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. It is an alien weapon that locks onto high cerebral activity. This makes it useless against unintelligent creatures (including enemies like the Raptor and the Mite). Once it locks onto a target and is fired, a projectile follows the enemy and drills into their skull, spilling cranial fluids everywhere until eventually detonating, leaving them headless.
- Iron Claw — a leghold trap that may be planted on the floor. Anybody that walks over one suffers from constant damage at a ten second period, before it disappears.
[edit] Power Core
A Power Core is glowing pink-and-blue crystalline item floating in a set location of an arena map. Most maps have one, while others have two. They are somewhat similar to the "Power Ups" in Quake III Arena in that they give any player who picks one up, temporary powers that make them more dangerous. These powers are randomly selected. When one is picked up, a lightning bolt is displayed in a lower corner of the players screen. This is a list of all the Power Core abilities that may be granted to a player:
- Blast Shield — Explosive Round weapons have no effect on the player.
- Bullet Shield — Bullet Round weapons have no effect on the player.
- Damage Reversal — Enemies that inflict damage on a player will receive part of the damage themselves.
- Energy Absorption — Energy Round weapons do not damage the player, but instead raises his/her health.
- Invisibility — The player becomes temporarily invisible.
- Invulnerability — No weapons have any effect on the player.
- Life Force Vampire — Health is returned to a player by damaging another player.
- Massive Damage — The damage power of a player’s entire arsenal are dramatically increased.
- Petrify — All damage caused by any weapon of a player will freeze an enemy in place(Similar to Freeze Gun secondary mode). A green mark is placed on the screen of a player who is petrified.
- Regeneration — Player's health is constantly regenerates.
- Slow Time — All opponents move in slow motion.
- Speed Burst — The player can run faster.
- Teleportation — When a player's health takes a major amount of damage, they will automatically teleport elsewhere to a random point in the map.
[edit] Medals
There are 50 medals in the game that can be earned. They are needed to unlock some cheats and character skins. Medal rewards range from successes in defeating bosses, accomplishments on certain maps, and not getting killed at all, to embarrassing types of medals rewarded for suicides, not killing anyone, and getting killed by an enemy 1000 times in total. Note, one of the medals is impossible to achieve in early copies of the game, due to the Two Player Trials glitch. The early versions are a black cartridge, while the fixed version is grey, the standard color of Nintendo 64 cartirdges.
