Hi, I thought you might be interested to know that I've put Panama Canal up for FA status. Feel free to comment or vote. — Johantheghost 16:30, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Centennial Bridge, Panama
Thanks for adding the real opening date — do you have a source for that, so we could cite it? Cheers. — Johantheghost 12:33, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- "I thank you for your hard work in these pages about my country" — so you're from Panama? I love Panama! I sailed my boat through the canal, and into the San Blas islands, and had a few great months there — I wish I'd had more time to explore the country. I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was, even the port captain, agricultural inspector, and the migracion officers! Great place, and I hope I can get back there one day — I'm freezing in Scotland right now! — Johantheghost 19:08, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Day of the Martyrs
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Martyrs' Day, but we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. [edit] Thumbnail sizes
Hi again, I notice you changed the thumbnail sizes in Bridge of the Americas. Until recently, I did the same thing myself, but it's actually bad style, and I am now removing all thumbnail sizes from the canal articles. Individual users can set their preferred thumbnail size in their preferences — go to "preferences", select "files", and select your preferrred size. The problem is that if you set the size in the article, then it overrides the user's preference, and they don't get the size they want. This should only be done if an image really needs to be displayed in a certain size. So, I'll take out the sizes, and if you want larger thumbnails, please change your preferences. Cheers! — Johantheghost 12:37, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Porto Bello
I noticed you corrected the spelling — how could I have missed that after the fantastic few days I had in Portobelo! Anyhow, I was just wondering — is "Porto Bello" the original, historic spelling? If so, would it be worth saying "... or Porto Bello, as it was known then", or something? Cheers. — Johantheghost 11:54, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
- I have always known it as Portobelo, I have seen it written as Porto Bello on foreign texts, but here it is always Portobelo. I happen to have a 2 volume book called "los viajes de Colón", its very interesting and i will write you a short translation of what they say about Portobelo so you can quote it or just read it: "On november 2, 1502 Columbus reached Portobelo. He named it like that because, as don Fernando - Columbus brother - says "its very big and so beautiful, with a small population. Its like a painting and its the most beautiful place I have ever seen"". The complete source is: Taviani, Paolo. Los viajes de Colón. Volume 2, page 299. Planeta-De Agostini Editorial. Barcelona, 1989. - Well, i couldn't agree more with Columbus, its really a beautiful port, as you know. I hope it can be developed someday as it deserves. Radioheadhst 03:42, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for that — I think I've been mislead by some of those foreign texts. It is absolutely a beautiful port! I got there in 2004, and just happened to be there for the driving out of the devils, which was fascinating. If you're interested, check out my pictures and log. Cheers! — Johantheghost 11:45, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vaya saludo!

--Taichi 05:36, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Panama Canal images
Hi,
Your images at Panama Canal expansion proposal will need to be listed for deletion. Unfortunately the permission you got from the webmaster just says it's OK for Wikipedia to use the images with attribution. This is very different from the acceptable usage, "The copyright holder allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that PanCanal.com is indicated as the source."
Basically these images need to be marked with the "permission" tag which unfortunately means they'll be deleted, as such images are not allowed on Wikipedia.
If you could ask the PanCanal.com webmaster to release the images in an unrestricted fashion - that is, *anyone*, not just Wikipedia, is allowed to use the images, as long as attribution is given - then we'd be in the clear.
Thanks - Tempshill 19:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree it'd be a shame to delete the images; that's why I'm asking you to get a more clear letter of permission, so they can be kept. The webmaster's statement you cited is vague: "we have no problem that you use the information from our Web site, as long as you indicate it as the source." Are you claiming that by "you", the webmaster meant to say "the entire world"? Or were you representing yourself as a Wikipedia editor in the conversation? I have assumed the latter is more probable. Thanks - Tempshill 19:38, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Yes, that'd be another good angle - possibly you or another editor could simply look up the law to see if works of the Panamanian government belong to the public domain, as is true in the US; and also of course someone would have to verify whether those maps and graphs are "works of the Panamanian government". (They might be works of a separate corporation the government set up, or something, and exempt from such a law.) Tempshill 20:26, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
