"Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana. It is the tenth song on their 1993 album, In Utero. The song was written in 1990, and was often used to open Nirvana concerts during the band's 1993/ 1994 In Utero tour.
A live version, recorded in February 1994 in Grenoble, France, appears on the 1996 compilation album, Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense.
[edit] Trivia
- In the music industry, the term "radio friendly" refers to a song which radio stations consider "airable" (i.e., one that appeals to a mainstream audience), while the term "unit shifter" refers to a song that can sell (or shift) copies of an album (or units). Ironically, "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is among the most abrasive songs on the already extremely radio un-friendly album In Utero. The irony is intentional, of course. Incidentally, early titles for the song include "Four Month Media Blackout" and "Nine Month Media Blackout."
- Kurt Cobain proposed the name as the title for the album that would eventually become "In Utero."
- There is a brief, obscured spoken phrase commonly misquoted within the intro; what is said is "So, Im just wondering, do you like me?"
