The city covers a surface of about 61,93 squarekilometers and had 3,607 inhabitants in April 2005. That means a low population-surface-ratio of just 58 inhabitants per skm, it is because of it consist out of several small villages - altogether about 23 of them which now form this big community. The community has first been mentioned in a written source in 1359. The name itself comes out of the Sorabian and means something like "place of the council". The minority of the Sorbs is still strongly influencing the spirit of the community.
