Rachel Proctor is a native of Charleston, West Virginia. She is the daughter of a nursing assistant and a supermarket manager. When she was in grade school, she appeared in local productions of Annie and The Sound of Music. She also competed in the talent portions of dozens of beauty pageants as a kid, just for the experience. By the time she was in junior high school, she had signed with a New York management company, the same agency that handled New Kids on the Block.
The New York connections led to her competing on Star Search where she performed in the style of Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. But when she didn't break through, she chose to concentrate on high school instead.
She joined a country band at 17 and honed her country style in the clubs, fairs and festivals of West Virginia. She was writing country songs by the time she graduated from high school and was making trips to Nashville to peddle them by age 18. When she got her first song publishing deal, she and her boyfriend moved to Nashville. After getting married a few months later, they met then-unknown Blake Shelton and formed a band together. But five years after moving to Nashville, Proctor divorced her husband and had been rejected for numerous record deals.
However, her songwriting confidence grew when, in 2002, Martina McBride recorded Proctor's song, "Where Would You Be." A division of RCA (McBride's label) signed Proctor after her third audition for the label.
In 2002, "Where Would You Be", sung by [Martina McBride] peaked on the US Country Chart at #3 and on the US Hot 100 Chart at #43.
Rachel Proctor's debut album, Where I Belong, was released in August 10, 2004, on BNA Records. Singles from Where I Belong included "Days Like This," "Where I Belong," "Me and Emily," and "Didn't I."
Rachel found country video success with the chart topping, critically acclaimed music video of "Me and Emily."
Rachel married John W. Lancaster, of Gainesville, Georgia in November 2005 in a small ceremony at The Hermitage, outside of Nashville, Tennessee
