Rachel C. Smith

Rachel C. Smith is a doctoral candidate in Fire Ecology at the Department of Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously a firefighter and EMT for Tulalip Bay Fire Department, Smith has served as a Hotshot with the Union IHC and a Smokejumper with the USFS R-5 Redding Smokejumpers. At 19 and 5'0, Smith was the youngest, smallest woman to succeed in the rigorous Smokejumping program, and only the 72nd female Smokejumper ever.
After graduating from Whitman College in May 2003, Smith received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study wildland fire. Over the subsequent sixteen months, Smith studied wildland fire in nine countries, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.
Smith later worked as an expert contractor to work on The Nature Conservancy's Global Fire Assessment. Smith has taught fire technology for Pasadena City College since 2005. Smith has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences and symposia, including international presentations in Cuba, Indonesia, Chile, Spain, and Portugal. Smith is presently a PhD candidate at the University of California at Berkeley.
