R Doradus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
R Doradus (also called HD 29712) is the name of a red giant Mira variable star in the far-southern constellation Dorado, and is located approximately 200 light-years away. Having an angular diameter of 0.057 ± 0.005 arcsec, and given its distance from Earth, it is calculated to be the star with the largest apparent size as of 1997. The diameter of R Doradus is about 250 million km. This is 370 ± 50 times the diameter of the Sun, and is larger than the distance between the Sun and Mars.
Its mass is about one solar mass, but it is 6500 times more luminous than the Sun.[1]
