Quill Awards

The Quill Awards are a "consumer-driven award created to inspire reading while promoting literacy."[1] The first award ceremony was broadcast on NBC on October 11, 2005; it is planned to be an annual award. In its first year, 20 different literary awards were presented. According to its creators, the two most prestigious awards presented were Book of the Year and Debut Author of the Year.

[edit] The Quills Foundation
The Quills Foundation, the organization behind the Quill Awards, is supported by a number of notable media corporations, including Reed Business Information, parent of Publishers Weekly, and The NBC Universal Television Stations. The Foundation also cites Parade Magazine, Borders, Barnes & Noble and The American Booksellers Association as "fully engaged partners."[2]
In addition to the Quill Awards for books, the Quills Foundation awarded a Quills Corporate Literacy Award to Verizon for its support of literacy programs in the United States.[3]
[edit] Selection process
Quill Award Winners were selected through a two-part process involving nomination followed by voting.
The Quills Nominating Board, whose function was to determine the list of publications that would be voted upon by consumers, was made up of interested booksellers and others.[4] In order to be eligible for nomination, a book had to be published in English during the previous year, and also meet one of the following criteria[5]:
- Starred reviews in Publishers Weekly
- Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Program
- BookSense Picks
- Borders© Original Voices
- Bestseller lists from Publishers Weekly, Book Sense, Barnes & Noble, and Borders
Readers selected the winners from among the five nominees selected by the Nominating Board for each category.
