QuickTime Player is the default media player for QuickTime movies and is shipped with the standard QuickTime installation for both Mac OS and Windows. It has shipped as the standard media player in Mac OS since System 7. The player itself doesn't do anything to play media files, it relies entirely on the QuickTime architecture.
This application was originally developed to support Apple's internal testing of QuickTime 1.0 and was then known as MoviePlayer. It was released as part of the QuickTime installation to provide a simple movie playback application for users. Over time the player grew in sophistication and scope. In 1999 as part of the release of QuickTime 4.0 it underwent a major user interface overhaul and became the first Apple application to use the Brushed Metal look. Although well received in some quarters, the new user interface drew criticism from the User Interface Hall of Shame.
