[edit] Student Representation
The Guild coordinates student representation, independent advocacy and welfare services for the students at QUT - supporting students to take positions on faculty and University committees, and the Academic Board.
The Guild Consists of an Executive and a Council.
The Executive consists of a President, General Secretary, Education Director, Welfare Director, Women's Director, two Queer Directors (one of whom must identify as a woman), an Indigenous Director, an International Student's Director, three campus Directors and a Sport and Recreation Director.
The Council consists of elected representatives from each campus as well as campus specific positions, a disability co-coordinator, a postgraduate representative and an environment co-coordinator. Unusually the executive have votes on the council even though council approves their reports, budjets and directions. A similar relationship exists with the National Union of Students and its executive and state branch presidents.
In 2006 a controversial move saw faculty representation introduced to the council. Some students argued that faculty representation had nothing to do with Student Unionism or the principles of unionism in fighting for the marginalised, exploited and oppressed, however the majority insisted that the Guild was like a 'student government' and needed representation from each faculty.
The guild also unofficially endorses collectives and Directors take direction from these bodies as direct participatory democracy. These include the women’s, queer, social justice, environment and education collectives.
[edit] Commercial Services
The Guild operates its commercial services over the three main campuses of QUT. These include four childcare centres, three fitness centres, three secondhand bookshops, three bars, an aquatic and squash centre, a campus shop, a merchandise shop, a cafe, a newsagency and a teppanyaki outlet.
The Guild also operates all the sport and recreation activities for the university community including social sports fixtures, university games tours, clubs and societies and trips, tours and courses.
[edit] NUS Membership
The QUT Student Guild is a member of the National Union of Students of Australia, and its Postgraduates' Students Association is a member of the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations. As with most other student organisations across Australia, the QUT Student Guild was actively involved in campaigning against the introduction of voluntary student unionism and continues to oppose this legislation.
