Queen Zeal (ジール, Jīru), the queen of the skyborne Kingdom of Zeal, is a non-player character (NPC) in the Chrono Trigger video game.

Queen Zeal is the ruler of the prosperous Kingdom of Zeal when her husband dies and leaves her with her two children: her eldest daughter Schala and her son Janus. After her husband's death, she becomes slowly more ambitious.

After being defeated by the hands of Crono's party, Magus falls into a timegate where he emerges in Zeal's time. There he employs his knowlege of future events to convince the Queen he is a prophet. The Queen uses her daughter to control the Mammon Machine, which is used to extract Lavos' power from deep within the planet. She planned to do this after her husband the King died and she was filled with sadness. She does this in order to use Lavos power to become immortal and usher Zeal into an era of even greater prosperity. When the 3 gurus object, the Queen retaliates by exiling the Guru of Life, Melchior, to the Mountain of Woe. Melchior believes that the more energy that resonates from the Mammon Machine, the more the Queen's mind degenerates. When Chrono and his party trespass into her Kingdom, the Queen captures and plans to kill them, but Shala secretly frees them.

So obsessed is Queen Zeal with consuming Lavos's energy that she commissions her dreamchild: the Ocean Palace. It is an undersea complex whose sole purpose is to bring the Mammon Machine as close as possible to Lavos, so as to draw more power. Since only Schala's power can regulate the machine, the Queen orders her subordinate Dalton to abduct her to the Ocean Palace. Crono and the group intervene just in time to be drawn into a portal and brought before Lavos, along with the Queen and Schala. Once Lavos annihalates the party, Magus follows them into the void to avenge himself on Lavos for some past wrong, but even he is no match for the giant parasite. As Queen Zeal gloats, Crono rises one last time to face Lavos, but the alien retaliates with a blast, incinerating him. Lavos then brings its wrath on Zeal by firing a volley of lasers up at the continent. The entire kingdom crashes violently into the sea, killing most of its population.

After the event known as the Fall of Zeal, a black hole forms in the sea, where the Ocean Palace reemerges in a gigantic modified form. Zeal takes up residence in the mysterious Black Omen, which exists outside the normal flow of time. Later in the game, Crono and his friends have the option of journeying inside the Black Omen to defeat the Queen, who has become immortal. After her defeat, she apparently dies a true human again.

[edit] Trivia

  • If one takes Magus into the Black Omen sidequest, he will have a special line of dialogue with Queen Zeal. She still does not realize the Prophet's true identity.
