Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles is an armoured regiment of the New Zealand Army, part of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps. It was formed in 1993 by the amalgamation of the remaining New Zealand regular and Territorial Force armoured units:

  • Queen Alexandra's Squadron - A Squadron (armoured)
  • Waikato/Wellington East Coast Squadron - B Squadron (armoured/armoured personnel carrier)
  • New Zealand Scottish Squadron - C Squadron (armoured personnel carrier)

The new regiment had a total of two regular squadrons and a TF squadron. The regiment was initially equipped with the Scorpion tank and M113 armoured personnel carrier. In 1999, with the reorganisation of the army, the regiment was reduced to a single squadron, with B Squadron transferring to the Hauraki Regiment and the New Zealand Scottish converting to an infantry company within the Otago and Southland Regiment. In 2004, the remaining squadron began requipping with the NZLAV, a version of the LAV III armoured vehicle specially developed for the New Zealand Army. In 2005 the unit moved to Burnham Military Camp.
