Quasis

Quasis is a form of quantum-shielding that freezes the quantum state of all particles on a spacecraft, in the Saga of the Skolian Empire books by Catherine Asaro.
Ships in both the Skolian empire and the Eubian Concord are equipped with devices, controlled by EIs that shift a ship into "quasis" to avoid damage from weapons fire. The quasis prevents any change in any quantum state of any particle, and hence, temporarily renders the ship invulnerable. However, while in quasis, the quantum state of all the occupants of the ship also freezes. Frozen at the quantum level, the crew experiences quasis as a disjointed segment of time.
Each weapon strike against a ship in quasis weakens its quasis field. The novels describe an unspecified number of weapon hits, typically suggesting two to four, that will collapse a quasis field and re-animate the crew in the midst of a massive explosion.
A collapse of a quasis field usually results in a rupture of the Klein bottles, which holds the anti-matter fuel used to power the ship.
