Quad City International Airport (IATA: MLI, ICAO: KMLI) is a public airport located 3 miles (5 km) south of the city of Moline in Rock Island County, Illinois, USA. It serves the Quad Cities area of Illinois and Iowa.
The Quad City International Airport is the 3rd busiest airport in Illinois – Chicago's O'Hare and Midway respectively lead the state. The international designation is for being an official port of entry and having a customs service. A Foreign Trade Zone and U.S. Customs Office are located at the airport enabling international inbound and outbound shipments.
In 2004, Northwest Airlines announced major expansion plans for Quad City International, with their feeder carrier, Northwest Airlink, using smaller jet aircraft. The only larger-jet service to this airport is provided by AirTran Airways, which uses Boeing 717 planes to fly from Quad City to Atlanta, Georgia, and seasonally to Orlando, Florida.
Since the airport is small when compared to airports in larger cities, smaller regional airlines have become the norm in recent years. In the past, other big jet servers to the Quad Cities have included Northwest, Pan Am, America West Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and TWA. With Chicago's O'Hare and Midway International Airports within only a couple hours drive, many people living in the Quad Cities area opt for the convenience and expanded options those airports have to offer by making the drive to nearby Chicago. However, the Quad City Airport has experienced steady growth in terms of passengers enplaned, as carriers like Northwest Airlink have completely replaced their turboprop equipment with newer regional jets. In fact, every commercial flight out of Quad City International is now operated with jet aircraft. This reflects a dramatic change from the early and mid-1990s, when turboprop equipment was much more prevalent. In 2001, the terminal underwent a major renovation to accommodate the increased regional jet traffic. A total of 432,088 passengers boarded at QCIA in 2005, compared to 442,737 in 2004. Passenger totals (both enplanements and deplanements) have been running in excess of 850,000 during each of the last few years.
