[edit] Conception
According to Lopez, the song had its initial idea taken off a dream that her husband, Marc Anthony, had.
"Marc woke up and said that he just had the craziest dream," Lopez recalled. When she asked him about the dream, he revealed that it was with Rocío Dúrcal in a room saying that she had a "song for Jennifer" and that she started to sing a melody.
It was two weeks after the Spanish singer died after a long battle with cancer. "She was a very beautiful, famous singer who sang a million songs with Juan Gabriel and on her own," Lopez explained.
Without any studio equipment nearby to capture the essence of the song before it slipped away from her half-asleep husband's mind, Lopez grabbed the phone, called up the couple's answering machine and told him, "Sing it in here."
But the song, which Anthony claimed Dúrcal had told him was called "Qué Hiciste," sat on the machine for a few months before Lopez knew what to do with it. She had already played the bulk of her forthcoming Spanish album, Como Ama Una Mujer, to her record label and considered it mostly finished. "They loved it, they thought it was great," she said. "But I thought there should be one more song."
Later, when Lopez was talking with a girlfriend, she says she finally understood why it felt like something was missing from her album, and that "Qué Hiciste" filled the void.
Lopez then called a Spanish writer she was working with to help her with adapting the lyrics – though she speaks Spanish, she wanted to make sure she was expressing everything accurately. "You have to have a total command of the language, so I couldn't write it all myself, you know what I mean?," she said. "I had to really depend on people to express what I was feeling."
So when Lopez sat down with the writer, she explained that "Qué Hiciste" was about a very intense relationship. "A woman is saying to a man: 'What have you done with our relationship? With our life? We had everything and with your own hands, you destroyed our house'...," Lopez explained. "And I said to [him], 'Do you understand what I'm saying?... Do you want me to say it in Spanish?'. He goes, 'No, I understand, I got it,' and it literally took him 15 minutes to write the song."
Lopez said the song started as a ballad, but as they continued to work on it, it turned into "something harder, with a bit more of a rock tinge to it. It's an incredibly intense song," she continued. "It's passionate and a lot of fun, with a killer message. I love it, and I hope other people love it as much as I do." She paused, laughing, "because then I'll be OK."
[edit] Music video
The video was filmed at Dumont Dunes, California. It has been directed by Michael Haussman. A behind-the-scenes peak was leaked onto the Internet, here: [1]. You must be registered to view and download the video, however. The clips show Jennifer performing in front of flames in the darkness of the desert. Even though the quality of the clips is poor, she showcases a clear new and improved vocal range.
