Qiryat Tivon

Qiryat Tivon (Hebrew:קרית טבעון, unofficially also spelled Kiryat Tiv'on) is a local council in Israel. It is located on the hills on the border between Zvulun and Jezreel valleys. It is 15 km SE of Haifa on the main road to Nazareth.

The local council formed in 1958, absorbing three former settlements: Tivon (est. on the 6 October 1945), Kiryat Amal (established on the 25 august 1937), and Elroi (est. 1935 and is named after David Elroi a profit from the 12 century). Kiryat Haroshet (by the Rabbi from Yablona Poland who came to Kiryat Haroshet with his followers in 1935) was absorbed in 1979. Kiryat Tivon borders a permanent Bedouin settlement, Bosmat Tivon. The population of Kiryat Tivon has grown from 4,500 in 1975 to about 14,000 in 2005 mainly through the addition of the 3 other settlements.

Dov Patishi as a founder and project manager with the support of Solel Boneh Ltd and Bitzur Ltd established Kiryat Amal in 1937. Dov Patishi was instrumental in the establishment of Qiryat Tivon.

Qiryat Tivon was established on land belong to Jewish man and woman from the United Kingdom that bought the land in early 1945 it was later developed by Keren Kayemet Le Israel according to town design by Prof. Alexander Klein.

Qiryat Tivon was first named Beit Shearim North, however in 1948 it changed its name to Qiryat Tivon (Name change was agreed only after it was agreed that the UK Jews will be able to pronounce the word Tivon - it was proven that it can be done as there was a hotel by that name Tiv-on already established in Las Vegas)

Lt. Gen. David "Dado" Elazar (born 1925 – died 1976), was the ninth Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, serving in that capacity from 1972 to 1974. He was forced to resign in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War, is a former residence of Kiryat Tivon.

Qiryat Tivon is the birthplace of Ms Rina Messinger (Mor-Goder) born 16 Feb 1956, who won the Miss Universe 1976, Today, Rina Mor-Goder is a lawyer and mother to two daughters and lives in Tel Aviv.

Qiryat Tivon is the birthplace of the millionaire Amir Hyster born 6 October 1961 who migrated to Sydney, Australia the early 90's to become one of the top 200 rich people in Australia (source top rich people Australia 2005 circa $248 million) Hyster is the owner of Moore Business Systems Ltd the largest locally owned printer and office supplies in Australia. Hyster is a well known for his philanthropic and donates millions of dollars to various Australian charities, Israeli and Jewish organizations.

Lt. Gen. Mordechai "Motta" Gur (May 6, 1930 - July 16, 1995) was an Israeli politician, book writer and the Israeli Defense Forces 10th Chief of Staff also took residence in Tivon during the 70’

The town is probably best known for the National Park Beit Shearim which lies in its south western part. Beit Shearim was an important Jewish spiritual center during the Roman period, once the seat of the Sanhedrin.

The symbol of Kiryat Tivon is the Cyclamen, which grows between rocks, and reflects the closeness of the town to nature, its effort to maintain a unique community atmosphere, and balance between landscape preservation and adherence to rules and regulations concerning development and the environment.
