The Qatar Portal - بوابة قطرّ

The State of Qatar (Arabic:دولة قطر) is a country in the Persian Gulf located on the Qatar Peninsula, and is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south. Qatar was a protectorate of the United Kingdom until 1971, when it gained its indpendance from the British, and has been ruled by the Al Thani family for over a hundred years. Qatar is a major exporter of natural gas and oil, and as a result, it enjoys a very high GDP per capita; the country is currently developing very rapidly as it seeks to move away from being dependant on these exports. Qatar is currently preparing for the 2006 Asian Games, which will be held in the capital, Doha.

The 15th Asian Games (also known as the XV Asiad), is a multi-sport event that will be held in Doha, Qatar from November 27, 2006 to December 15, 2006. The games are participated by different countries located in Asia. The event is going to one of the most widely broadcasted events all over the world.

45 nations will be participating in the games, which will include 39 different sports, making them the biggest Asian Games to date. The games will be centered at Khalifa International Stadium, which was recently completley renovated for the games.
