The State of Qatar (Arabic:دولة قطر) is a country in the Persian Gulf located on the Qatar Peninsula, and is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south. Qatar was a protectorate of the United Kingdom until 1971, when it gained its indpendance from the British, and has been ruled by the Al Thani family for over a hundred years. Qatar is a major exporter of natural gas and oil, and as a result, it enjoys a very high GDP per capita; the country is currently developing very rapidly as it seeks to move away from being dependant on these exports. Qatar is currently preparing for the 2006 Asian Games, which will be held in the capital, Doha.
