A qalam (Arabic: قلم) is a type of pen made from a dried reed, used for Arabic calligraphy. In modern Arabic, the word simply means 'pen' or 'pencil,' derived from the Greek word Kalamos In Bengali Basher or Konchir kalam. also in Bengali Khager Kalam.

It is also the name of a system of Arabic transliteration, suggested in 1985. [1]
