Pythio

Pythio or Pythion (Greek, Modern: Πύθιο, Ancient/Katharevousa: -on), older form Pithio and Pithion, is a town located in the eastern part of Didymoteicho municipality and the province. It is 16 km ENE of the centre. Turkey is located south and east of the town. The settlement is connected south and east of GR-51 and a road linking to Keşan and south to the Dardanelles. The border crossing is to the south-southeast. The settlement is situated in a valley area. Another railway links to Turkey especially places to Uzunköprü and eastward to Istanbul and the continent of Asia. It is the nearest railway from Thessaloniki. It is located SSE of Svilengrad, Bulgaria and 20 km S of Orestiada, S of Edirne, Turkey, NW of Uzunköprü and Kesan in Turkey, NNE of Alexandroupoli and ENE of Soufli and Didymoteicho.

The hills are situated to the west. Farmlands surround the area are to the north and to the west. The forests near the Evros lies to the northeast and to the south and further west.

Pythio has a school, a lyceum, a church, a train station (Alexandroupoli - Soufli - Uzunköprü - Istanbul) and (north to Orestiada) with a junction east of Pythio and a square (plateia).

On February 18, 2005, the flooding of the Evros began as water levels went as high as 6.5 m above ground, that's 10 cm above the embankment level which is danger to its residents. Pythio was flooded. Three days later, the water level dropped to 5.48 m, below the danger level of 5.70 m.

Another flood which began from March 1, 2005 flooded several places again and a town which flooded a local school that has a playground leaving the top of the basketball nets unflooded in Pythio. Several other buildings, roads and southwest to Didymoteicho. The third flood of the year later reached the low lying areas of Pythio, Amorio and Lavara along with Didymoteicho. The water level on March 8 was 5.8 m.
