The correct title of this article is pydance. The initial letter is shown capitalized due to technical restrictions.

pydance is a rhythm game similar to Dance Dance Revolution or Pump It Up. It is an open-source and free program, written entirely in Python. Unlike StepMania, the artwork used in the game is not derived from Dance Dance Revolution, and therefore can be packaged with Debian GNU/Linux.

You can use your keyboard to play pydance. It is also possible to play using a PlayStation-compatible controller or dance mat, using a specialized adapter that connects to a computer's USB, parallel, or PS/2 keyboard port.

The concept is simple: as arrows rise to the top of the screen and pass a certain point, press the corresponding arrow on the keyboard/controller/dancemat. You are scored based upon how close your arrow presses are to the right moment. Sometimes this is easier said than done and takes some practice. See Dance Dance Revolution and Pump It Up for a more in-depth description.

pydance reached version 1.0 in March of 2003, and development has been slow since then. Although the project is maintained, its developers consider it complete.

[edit] System Requirements

pydance can run on most operating systems that support Python and SDL. GNU/Linux is the most common and supported platform. Unlike StepMania, pydance does not require 3D acceleration, and so can be used without an OpenGL driver.

pydance has been accepted in Debian Etch. Is does not, however, work out-of-the-box, beacause of bugs in pygame. Refer to [1]
