Puyehue Volcano is flat-topped volcano located in the Andes, in the Osorno Province, in Los Lagos Region of Chile. It is surrounded by a volcanic sand plateau, with fumaroles and hot springs. The shallow summit caldera is ca 2 km wide and usually filled with snow. The name comes from Mapudungun language: puye = a creek fish, hue = place.
[edit] Approach
From the south, the plateau can be approached from El Caulle on Ruta 215, which goes from Osorno to the border with Argentina. Ascend ca 1,000 m on forested slope to the plateau, where there is a popular campsite and refugio. From the north, there is a trail from Riñinahue near Lago Ranco. It ascends ca 1,000 m through dense forest to the plateau.
There is further ca 600 m of ascent over sand and loose rocks to the summit.
