Puthalam is a panchayat town in Kanniyakumari district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Puthalam had a population of 11,828. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Puthalam has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 80%. In Puthalam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.It lies between the Manakudy estuary and the Indian ocean.The estuary is famous for its biodiversity and migrating birds.The wildlife dept. has introduced mangrove plantations ,which is a welcome move.Puthalam is also known for its salt pans which are existing since the British colonial rule.
