Discussion moved here from Talk:Purple Swamphen

Should this article really be listed under wikiproject Florida? And should it really have a whole heading dedicated to Swamphen in North America? I was asked to remove some New Zealand specific references to the pukeko (NZ name for the swamphen) and seeing as I was asked to remove the nation specific refference to NZ then the nation specific refference to North America should also be removed. Comments? - Faded_Mantis 09:10, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

That it is becoming established is worthy of a mention for sure - I'm inclined to agree with the you about the heading. I'm also a little unclear about the pukeko bit - surely that is the name for it in New Zealand? Never heard it called anything else when I was there. Surely it's a Maori word that has been coopted by New Zealand English? Sabine's Sunbird 10:20, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Well I put it under a seperate heading because it didn't seem to fit anywhere else; please feel free to tweak it to better fit. Don't see why any "nation-specific" things would need to be removed, as they're still the facts, just the facts...
The Purple Swamphen in Florida has some ornithologists worried about possible competition with the Purple Gallinule; IIRC there have been some reductions on observed numbers of gallinules at swamphen sites, but I can't be sure on that. As for WP:FLA; I'm adding "Florida specialties" to that WP and this is one of them.
Later this afternoon or tomorrow I'll see if I can dig up the Winging It (ABA newsletter) article on the swampmonsters and post a citation. - Aerobird 15:56, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
