Cam'ron's "Purple Haze" was released on December 7, 2004. The album was given very little promotion due to numerous push back dates (the 2004 album's introductory track states, "Welcome to Purple Haze. Previously written in 2001.") but still managed to go gold in sales on January 14th 2005 [1]. The lead single "Girls" was not as successful as "Get Em Girls" or "Down And Out" (which featured Kanye West), the latter of which became Cam'ron's biggest single since the Summer 2002 smash, "Oh Boy" [2]. Though the record was by no means as commercially successful as the rapper's previous effort, Come Home with Me, however it received strongly positive reviews and garnered serious attention on websites (especially Pitchfork Media and Stylus Magazine) not generally regarded as primary outlets for hip hop journalism or rap music criticism. It received mixed reviews from more hip hop oriented reviewers, such as HipHopDX.com

[edit] Notes

  • The release of this album was delayed several times from November 2003.
  • Two tracks appear on Purple Haze that appear on Diplomatic Immunity 2 by The Diplomats (Family Ties and Take Em to Church). However, the two Family Ties are different. Family Ties on Diplomatic Immunity 2 features Hell Rell and 40 Cal, while on Purple Haze, it is only Cam'Ron. "Take Em To Church" on Purple Haze also features a slighty modified beat from the one featured on Diplomatic Immunity 2.
  • The track Get em Girls was originally released on mixtapes (see Dipset/Byrd Gang Vol.1) using an orchestral sample but it was not cleared for use and so an altered version appears here.
  • Lord You Know feat. Jaheim is a track Cam'ron made a music video for the Purple Haze hype. The music video stated that the song was to be on Purple Haze. However, the album had too many songs and too little space to offer; therefore, the hit single was to be on Sippin' On Sizzurp mixtape.
