The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), was established in 1962 in Ludhiana, Punjab on the pattern of land grant colleges of USA with a mandate to conduct excellence in research and teaching, its has an integrated teaching research and extension programme. It has a international reputation for excellence in agriculture due the level of awards it has won and achievements made throughout its history, particularly during India's historic Green revolution.

[edit] Introduction & Mission Statement Goals
It is committed to continue improvement in the productivity and profitability of agriculture and allied sectors through the achievement of the following goals:
- To provide quality education in the areas of agriculture, veterinary science, agricultural engineering and allied fields.
- To undertake basic applied and adaptive research to seek appropriate solutions to emerging problems in agriculture and develop relevant technologies to improve socio-economic conditions of the faring community.
- To develop and effective mechanism for the transfer of technology to the farmers and agricultural organisations through different extension programmes with a view to improve agricultural productivity and economic conditions of rural population.
- To develop appropriate technology for supporting the growth of agro-based industries.
The university facilities includes laboratories, lecture rooms, instructional and research farms, modern instrument farm machinery, transport and library facilities.
[edit] Infrastructure and Athletics
The university has a very strong reputation in sports and it & its alumini have won many awards for excellence in sport. The university has facilities for basketball, badminton, cycling, cricket, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, volleyball, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, weight lifting and Kabbadi. There is also a cycling velodrome, an astroturf field for hockey, and a stadium for various sports.
There is an outdoor theatre for holding cultural activities and a student community center for the conduct of miscellaneous extra curricular activities. Numerous international and Punjabi culture festives have been staged at the university.
There is a faculty of 1250 members at the main campus and at regional research stations.

- Best Institution Award the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - 1995.
It has been acclaimed as Best Agricultural University in Asia, PAU has achieved distinguished status at the national and international level. It has played a unique role in ushering green revolution in India.
It has the distinction of winning the first Best Institution Award of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in the year 1995.

At present the university offers 5 bachelor's, 51 master's and 42 doctorate programmes in 50 departments of 5 constituent colleges. In addition it also offers a Bachelor of Education programme and 5 Diploma programmes in its 5 constituent colleges :
- College of Agriculture (BSc, MSc, PhD)
- College of Agricultural Engineering (BTech, MTech, PhD)
- College of Veterinary Science
- College of Home Sciences
- College of Basic Sciences and Humanities
An Institute of Agricultural was established at Gurdaspur. In 1988 the university switched from trimester to semester system and in 1993 it switched from the letter grade system to a 10.00 credit point average system.
