Welcome to my talk page. Feel free to leave me a message if you a question, comment, or just want to say hi. Just make sure to sign it (with ~~~~) and create a subsection for it.

To those of you who supported my recent RfA, thank you. I have decided to not to individually thank the majority of you because I feel that is spamming.

[edit] VandalProof Moderators

Thank you for your willingness in helping me out with VandalProof! You've now been made a moderator, so when you load VandalProof the next time, you should see 'Moderator' in front of your username, and you should also find the Moderate List item under the User Tools menu. I've made a very basic page explaining what's expected of moderators and how to do certain tasks, which can be found here: User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof/ModeratorTools. If you change your mind and don't want to moderate, please contact me. Again, thanks! AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Moderating

I'm wondering, are you also expiencing problems with approving users for VandalProof? --TBC??? ??? ??? 02:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Punk'd

Hi. Sorry to bother you, but I'm having some trouble on the Punk'd article. An unregistered user named BigBang19 keeps re-inserting material into the article that is irrelevant, poorly worded, etc. I've tried posting a message on that article's Talk Page, but he has not responded. Because he had no User Page, my message to him was the first one on it. If you could check out the bottommost section on the Talk Page and chime in with your two cents on his revisions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Nightscream 05:51, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. :-) Nightscream 15:40, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Since your last warning to BigBang19, he's continued to vandalize the Punk'd article, undoing the grammatical corrections I made some time ago, and inserting irrelevant, non-noteworthy material about Kuthcer's observence of Jewish holidays and his marriage to Demi Moore. Can someone block this person for a period of more than just 24 hours so that he gets the message? Nightscream 17:45, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

I understand your concerns. Normally, content disputes would be settled by consensus. But the problem with this is that consensus requires both parties to submit to it; to have a dialogue. BigBang does not do this. His only postings on the Discussion page have not only been sporadic, but vague, and unrelated to the specific concerns we have tried to voice to him. How, then, should we proceed?
As far as his latest edits being well-intentioned, let's look at the three bits of material from his last couple of edits: 1. First he mentions Kutcher's marriage and religion as the reasons for his non-appearances on the show. First of all, Kutcher has indeed been appearing on the show to reveal the pranks to the victims. Second, even if this were not true, the level of detail (his marriage, his religious observations) constitute WAY too much non-noteworthy detail. The bottom line is that the degree to which Kutcher appears or does not appear should not merit even a blip in the article. 2. He mentioned Terrell Owens being a Dallas Cowboy. Granted. So I re-inserted that after deleting the rest. 3. In the Celebrity Accomplices section, he keeps added the phrase "but uncredited", so that the syntax of the resulting sentence is glaringly wrong. In other words, the sentence becomes: Pranked her Be Cool co-star The Rock in Season 3 Episode 3, but uncredited. That isn't a sentence. Even if we agreed that that detail should be left in, it should read "but she was uncredited." The guy can barely maintain any semblance of proper grammar, syntax, punctuation, proper wording, etc. But despite my pointing out this to him on the Discussion page, he keeps putting it in, unfazed by even the most fundamental admonitions of language. I understand that time is tight for you, but if you or anyone has any ideas on this, I'd be game to hear 'em. Thanks. :-) Nightscream 06:01, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Attention Moderators!

Due to technical problems, I've removed all moderators other than myself. This bugs will be fixed in the next release, likely on Saturday, and I will then add you back as moderators. AmiDaniel (Talk) 22:45, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Hey PS2pcGAMER, I was wondering if you might be willing to use your administrative power to s-protect and page-move-protect the Welcome page (if that's even allowed...). I've been trying to think up different ways to crash VP, and moving the start page seems to be the easiest and most efficient way to do that. I'm also gearing up to release 1.1 sometime this weekend, and I'll drop you a line once it's ready for download. Thanks in advance. AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. After the moderator bug happened a couple of days ago, one non-mod was able to modify the welcome page and have his changes realised within VP, and then there was some chat in IRC about how easy it would be to get by my "security." The mod bug resulted from problems in reading the page history (I'll spare you the technical details), and if someone managed to move the page along with its history, it would be very simple for anyone to edit the resulting redirect to include their username and have his changes realized (as well as to disable the tool for everyone else, except for me of course =)). And especially since I'm now adding this "revert all user contributions" feature in the next release, I'm getting a little concerned about abuse. S-protecting's probably not neccessary at all, but I figured it wouldn't hurt anyone; the page move protection, however, could save me and other editors a lot of headaches. If you feel the need to add the template, would it be possible to add it further down the page (in the command's section) or on the talk page? Do you list userpages on WP:PP? I can think of quite a few admins with protected userpages, and it doesn't seem particularly vital to alert others when pages in userspace are protected, but I wouldn't object to your listing it there. As I said before, s-protection isn't really too necessary, so if you'd rather it just be move-protected, feel free to lift the semiprotection. Thanks again for your help! It's much appreciated. AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:56, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Semi Protection template

Hi you seem to be consistantly using the wrong template for marking anon/user/user talk pages as semi. They do not use the standard {{sprotected}} they instead use {{usertalk-sprotect}}. Please in the future use the correct template as it helps us maintain accurate categorization of these pages, thanks!  ALKIVAR 01:09, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Alkivar. I knew I was using the wrong template, but I couldn't remember the correct template and I had to get off the computer and so I didn't have time to look it up. As far as consistently using the wrong templates, could you cite other examples? I have only protected 3 pages, one of which was the featured picture which doesn't get the warning template. The 2nd template I used was correct as far as I can tell, although I shouldn't have used it at all (long story). And the 3rd time I have protected a page was this one. I just figured I should clarify this. Anyway, thanks for watching out for this. I do appreciate that you took the time to send me a message about this issue. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 02:09, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:49, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Attention Moderators: Toolserver

As you may be aware, the English language Wikipedia is no longer replicating data to the Wikimedia toolserver. Therefore, the data provided by Interiot's edit count tool is growing increasingly out of date, and in the interest of more accurately responding to user registration requests, I'd like to ask all moderators to look into downloading other tools for determining raw edit counts independent of the toolserver. One alternative would be Flcelloguy's Tool, although I've found his tool a little takes a considerable ammount of time to retrieve edit counts, and as such is not ideal for what we're doing. I'd also like to recommend my raw edit counter, which can be found at User:AmiDaniel/EditCounter, that provides the ability to limit the number of edits to be counted as well as the namespace in which to search and, thereby, is able to run at a much faster rate than Flcelloguy's tool. If you choose to use my tool, I recommend that you query mainspace edits with the limit set to 500 (though the default is 250, which runs somewhat faster). In my local version of VandalProof, the count button now loads this tool to query mainspace edits with a limit of 500, and, unless I find a tool more suited to our purpose, this will likely become the standard in the next release. If you choose not to download an alternative edit counter, please be sure to check the contributions of all users who fall below the standard 250 mainspace requirement, as they may have become more active within Wikipedia since the toolserver went down and now may be suited to use VandalProof. I'm sorry about all the problems we've been having since VP's release, but we're hopefully nearing the end. Thanks again for all your help! AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:50, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External link removal

I suggest re-reading your guidelines for external links.

"However, adding a certain number of relevant external links is of valuable service to our readers."

"Is it accessible? Is it proper (useful, tasteful, etc.)? Is it entered correctly? Is the link, in the context used, likely to have a substantive longevity. For example, it is not useful to link to a homepage that changes often and merely happens to have a relevant picture or article on its front page at the moment. Similarly, be very wary of citing an unstable page as a source. "

yes on all the above

"Sites that contain neutral and accurate material not already in the article."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links

You dont want us getting clicks from here? What is the problem? If you are going to remove us then remove them all. XS is one of the top overclocking resources on the net.

This applies to all entries, dont be so obvious that you dont want XS listed for your own personal reasons. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by FUGGER (talkcontribs) 00:28, 20 April 2006.

Feel free to bring possible mistakes to my attention, but please make sure that I actually made the edits. I have made only two recent edits to Overclocking, removing all of the forums. 1 and 2. Also, please read what Wikipedia is not. If a site is notable for some reason, then it belongs in the EL. If it is a source for a claim, it should be listed, but as a reference. A site that adds good info to the article is much more important than a listing of 5-6 generic websites that were listed previously. There has also been some discussion on Talk:Overclocking about the EL, but only 3 people (including me) have even commented. We have all basically agreed that a bunch of forums don't belong there, but feel free to express your opinion. The links to the benchmark databases probably also don't belong there, or at the very least should be reduced. There is Benchmark (computing) for that.
I also don't see why you feel that need to attack me. When have I ever said anything bad about XS? In our previous discussions, you have always acted like I am out to get XS and that simply isn't the case. Just because I visit the site very rarely and do my best to remove the link spam from Overclocking doesn't mean that I have a problem with your website.
The site owner claiming that "XS is one of the top overclocking resources on the net." is extremely biased. It isn't like I am trying exclude XS, I am only trying to keep Wikipedia free of linkspam. Please assume good faith before attacking me and making assumptions.
Anyway, when leaving a message, please always remember to sign your comments by typing ~~~~. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 03:08, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Baboon vandal

Thanks for blocking the baboon vandal who is also the chanlord imposter. However I have a feeling he will come back again as soon as the block wears off. I don't think I'll be around the computer for a couple of days so could you keep an eye on my userpage, Chanlord's and on User:124.168.7.189's user contributions? Especially in the 12hours following the timeout of his block. Thanks, Witty lama 12:04, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Gee you've been busy following this guy! He's quite persistent isn't he? In fact I wonder that he hasn't changed his modus operandi since he's come to such atention. One only needs to look at the "what links here" for the "olive baboon"' picture to see where he's been editing, regardless of the username he's under! Also, I appreciate that you removed the "imposter of chanlord" tag on the IP address page - the IP was never an imposter I realise. The reason I put it there was so that people could find all of the alises of this fellow all in the one place - at the category page. You've made a nice list on all of the blocked "baboon" userpages but I wonder if it is possible to have a complete list of his activities somewhere (including the Chanlord impersonations), perhaps somewhere within Category:Wikipedia vandalism? [edit] FPC promotion bot

Hiya PS2, and thanks for volunteering for bot testing. Will you be available to take over the testing next week? I'm away most of the week without my computer so I won't be able to close any nominations.

Do you have Windows? And do you use happen to use pywikipediabot? If you use the pywikipediabot framework already, I'll just send you my source code. If not, I can compile it into a simple executable for windows or unix/linux. Once we have it ready for community use, I'll make both the source and a compiled version available. [edit] FP promotion bot update

Sorry I haven't sent this through yet. I am having problems packaging it for systems that don't have python installed, because of some internal mechanics of the pywikipediabot framework (hard-coded subfolders, references to non-existent modules). I'm going to post a help request at the mailing list to see if anyone else has managed it, but I suspect I'm going to have to build my own version of several of the modules before I can bundle it into an exe.

If you do already have python installed, I could send you a zip of my entire pywikipediabot folder with the new script dropped in the folder. That would work :-)

I'll publish the source code tonight or tomorrow, which will at least leave you the option of testing and using it if you do want to install the pywikipediabot framework. Sorry again for the delay. ~ VeledanTalk 20:16, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FP Bot error

Hi & thanks for the traceback. That particular problem is why I suggested running the script using IDLE instead of the default python console - I used to have the same problem running the pywikipediabot framework myself except when using IDLE, when it always worked for whatever reason. I can see you are using IDLE, but it still doesn't like the character encoding. Basically the wiki uses more than the basic 127 ascii codes, and python is not expecting it.

Do you have the line

console_encoding = 'utf-8'

in your user_config.py in the pywikipediabot directory (instructions @ meta)? I don't know for certain that that will fix it: those instructions weren't there back when I installed it and I ended up globally changing my python default encoding to Latin-1 in sitecustomize.py (as not recommended here) which seemed to make the problem go away.

This is another of the things I will have to sort out once and for all before I can distribute this or any other tool as a standalone program :-/ . I do hope it works for you with one of the above minor modifications, and I'm sorry for the frustration! ~ VeledanTalk 15:15, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Explanations of my past...

Hi, I am posting about your reply on AmiDaniels talk page on my Vandalproof request. Well, I looked at the two edits you talked about. I remember them. I know they were questionable, but that was before I read all of the Wikipedia rules. Back when I made those two edits, I really was not that serious about Wikipedia, and I did not think I would continue using it and contributing to it. But something all of the sudden hooked me onto it. I saw more and more vandalism. I started helping, and now I take 3/4ths of my time away from working my own website (which is going quite well) and put it toward Wikipedia. I am on it most of the day now. I regret ever making those two edits you pointed out that blemish my "resume", and I wish I could erase them. And about not warning users about their vandalism, that was mostly because earlier today, there was this one time (especially on the RuneScape article) when people were vandalising faster than I could revert, and I didnt have the time to warn them. And I forgot to do it later. Sorry, I'll try harder to warn them (thats sorta why I want vandalproof). Cheers! Wikipeedio 00:21, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bot woes

Sorry about this silence on this but I am away again. I've also got stuck trying to fix the error because I can't reproduce it :-( I tried removing all encoding settings from my python installation but the script still worked. I tried freshly downloading and installing python and pywikipedia on my server, and tried to run the script exactly as you would have done, but again it ran without a hitch. Ditto on my mum's laptop. I know that I did have the problem you describe (or something very like it) when I first started using pywikipedia last autumn, so you are unlikely to be the only one who will have a problem but I am at a loss for the moment wondering how to fix a bug I can't make happen on my own machines. I'll let you know if I think of something soon, or if I get an answer from the mailing list. Also, like you say, a binary distribution might fix it but that's a few days down the line at least. I can't fix all the issues py2exe has with the pywikipediabot framework, so I'll have to strip out all the unnecessary (unused) code from pywikipedia and hope what's left compiles OK ~ VeledanTalk 10:48, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User: Hganesan

I noticed you left this user some warning as to what he shouldn't be doing. For the past week, he's been littering the Kobe Bryant/Steve Nash pages with his opinion and POV material. It's at the point where anyone that questions him he reverts their edits that remove his POV. He's done quite a number on the Steve Nash webpage as you can see and reverting it back is of no use as he adds his garbage back every time. A theme that he's operated on is basically that Kobe Bryant deserved the MVP and Steve Nash didn't. He's gone great lengths to instill this tone in Nash and Kobe's articles. Originally, it was blatant POV but now he's been trying to do it by posting selective facts that only support his view. Now, even though much of the stuff he now posts is factual, it is unrelated to the sections he posts them in and often totally irrelevant to any encyclopedia article. I think something needs to be done about him. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.85.118.202 (talkcontribs) 02:32, 15 May 2006.

When I click on the picture it goes to ball hog. You are clearly biased against Kobe. I am putting that picture back, don't delete it. I get 7 days remember. That image is not copyrighted. It never was. As an administrator, you should be less biased and more fair. Stop deleting everything i write that is btw factually correct and all the pictures I post. You even put him as a ballhog and your article on ballhog was just so lopsided it was not even funny. Hganesan 01:10, 16 May 2006 (UTC)hganesan

How come then your name is under the Kobe Bryant ball hog picture when i click on it??? That means you put it on. And you put on the other one on Kobe Bryant and linked them together. So you could get everyone to think he is a ball hog. Hganesan 01:53, 16 May 2006 (UTC)hganesan

[edit] Care to try out a new tool?

I recently wrote a new tool to simplify the process of doing history merges, but alas! I am unable to test it on en.wikipedia as I'm not an administrator. It would, however, be greatly appreciated if you'd be willing to take it out for a test drive, perhaps testing on your own sandboxes, etc. I'm pretty sure it works just fine, but before I go and advertise it I'd like to be absolutely sure. I'm going to be away until later this evenening (probably 6hrs from now or so), but please drop me a note on my talk page if it does/does not work for you (or if you'd rather I find someone else to test it). Thanks! AmiDaniel (talk) 20:06, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
