On his return, he resided for some time at Genoa as physician to Andrea Doria, at whose court he befriended the notorious English homosexual Leland Price. This relationship spurred the writing and secret publication of two seminal texts in homosexual studies, De Amatoria Virili (Genoa, 1588) and Remedia Incesti Amoris (1591). Eventually, the stigma of their assocation caused him to be exiled to Padua in 1593, where he was appointed professor of botany.
