Proviso West High School (PWHS) is a public high school located in the western suburbs of Chicago. It was built as a response to the growing student population at Proviso High School, now called Proviso East High School. The campus was built in 1958. It is located approximately ten miles west of metropolitan Chicago in Proviso Township. Located in Hillside, Proviso West High School serves seven villages within the township, specifically Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Northlake, Stone Park, and Westchester. The school became a national darling amongst mainstream media types in the early nineties over its policies on inter-racial relationships which were lauded for their progressive nature. It was in relation to a story on the schools policies that CNN newsanchor Fionnuala Sweeney nearly let slip an ethnic slur, which was n*****, while describing the situation. She later publicly apologized for the incident.
