From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Protector General of the Western Regions (Traditional Chinese: 西域都護; Simplified Chinese: 西域都护; pinyin: Xīyù Dūhù was a Chinese military officer in charge of the Western Regions, roughly today's Xinjiang (everything from Tian Shan to Dunhuang). First set up in 60 BC, it was the highest military position in Western Han Dynasty. After at least 18 different protector generals, The post was abandoned by the time of Wang Mang's Xin Dynasty, until Emperor He of Eastern Han awarded the position (now with administrative obligations as well) to general Ban Chao in 91 with his successful conquest of the region. In 107, another rebellion forced the Chinese government out of the region, and it was forever lost to the Han Dynasty.
