The word protection, which generally means anything that helps to ward off some threat, has several jargon uses:
- Civil protection, or Civil defense, is a function of civil society concerning the life, health, property and environment of citizens
- Environmental protection, a political movement directed towards the preservation, restoration, or enhancement of the natural environment
- Contraception (euphemism)
- Protection (climbing), a climber's basic safety mechanism
- Protection racket, an extortion scheme
- Protectionism, in international trade, the institution of tariffs and regulations on imports in order to protect domestic industry
- Protective clothing, clothing that shields the body from hazards
- a Protectorate, in politics and history, is the mandate of a protector, notably:
- form of guardianship held by a Lord Protector, either as a form of regency for a Monarch or during The Protectorate as a British republic
- the relationship under international law between a strong power (the protector) and a weaker one, which either simply enjoys the benefit of help when needed, or is obliged to accept, which historically often amounted to de facto colonization
- Ingress protection rating (IP), protection ranking of electronic equipment against objects or liquid
